Learn about Naoshima New Art Museum

Located within the village, the Naoshima New Art Museum is the 10th art facility designed by Tadao Ando, ​​and the first to have "Naoshima" in its name. The museum exhibits and collects works by artists from Japan and other parts of Asia, and through rotating exhibits and various public programs, it aims to convey more diverse perspectives and expressions, as well as multifaceted messages about the times and society, and to be a place of exchange and collaboration where people can come again and again and encounter a wide variety of people from both inside and outside the island.

Learn about Architecture

The building will be designed by Tadao Ando, ​​who has been involved in numerous buildings on Naoshima for over 30 years since the opening of the Benesse House Museum in 1992. The building features a large roof that gently connects the ridge of the hill and has two basement floors and one above ground. The staircase, where natural light enters from the skylight, continues in a straight line from the ground to the basement, with four galleries located on either side of the staircase. There is a cafe on the north side of the ground floor, and from the terrace overlooking the Seto Naikai , visitors can enjoy views of the typical Seto Naikai scenery, including Teshima Island and fishing boats passing by.

The museum's exterior will feature black plaster exterior walls and pebble walls that match the image of burnt cedar, so that it will blend in with the landscape of the Honmura village. The approach to the museum and the architecture have been designed to gently connect the history of Naoshima and the activities and experiences of its people.

Learn about the exhibition

The 2025 exhibition to commemorate the museum's opening will feature new and representative works by 12 artists (groups) from Asia, including well-known and up-and-coming artists from Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, which will be exhibited on a large scale in the building's four gallery spaces (total area of ​​approximately 1,500 m2) on two basement floors and one floor above ground, as well as in the cafe area and outdoor grounds.
