1. [Fastest & Convenient] From Fukuoka to Yufuin by Expressway Bus

Direct access to Yufuin is possible not only from Fukuoka Airport, but also from major bus terminals in Fukuoka City. All seats are reserved, so you can be sure to find a seat even if you have large luggage. As of February 2026, the express bus "Yufuin-go" operates approximately 14 round trips per day (28 trips in total), making it a reasonable and convenient means of transportation.

From Fukuoka Airport : The shortest journey time is 100 minutes from the international terminal. After arriving at Fukuoka Airport, you can go directly to Yufuin.

From Hakata/Tenjin : You can also take the Yufuin-go highway bus from Hakata Bus Terminal or Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal. It takes about two and a half hours from Tenjin.

2. [Train Journey] Scenic sightseeing express trains

If you're traveling by train from Fukuoka, the best part is being able to enjoy the lush greenery along the JR Kyudai Main Line. The express train from Hakata Station to Yufuin Station takes about two and a half hours.

Runs every day! "Yufuin no Mori" and "Limited Express Yufu"

The tourist express "Yufuin no Mori" runs daily from Hakata Station to Yufuin Station. From the moment you board, you'll be in the mood for a trip, thanks to its warm wooden interior and on-board sales offering Yufuin delicacies. The "Limited Express Yufu," which runs the same route, is also popular as a reliable means of transportation to Yufuin.

Special Travel Option: Japan's Finest Luxury Train

For an even more luxurious experience, you can choose from the following special trains depending on the day they are in operation:

3. [Sightseeing Route] via Beppu and Oita

If you also want to enjoy the steam from Beppu's hot springs, you can take the JR Nippo Main Line via Kokura Station. However, if you are traveling from Beppu Station to Yufuin Station, you need to be careful when transferring trains.

Transfer at Oita Station

If you take the Sonic Limited Express from Hakata Station, you can get to Beppu or Oita without changing trains, but to go from Beppu to Yufuin, you will generally need to change to the JR Kyudai Main Line at Oita Station, with the exception of some limited express trains.

Hakata Station - Kokura Station - Beppu Station - Oita Station : Approximately 2 hours to 2 hours and 20 minutes on the Sonic Express without changing trains. If you are traveling by Shinkansen from Hiroshima, you can also change to the Sonic Express at Kokura Station.

Beppu Station to Oita Station : 10-15 minutes by Sonic Express or local train. Oita Station to Yufuin Station: Approximately 1 hour by local train on the JR Kyudai Main Line, or approximately 45 minutes by express train.

Direct bus from Beppu to Yufuin

If you are heading from Beppu to Yufuin, we recommend traveling by bus rather than train as it avoids the stress of having to transfer.

Local bus, sightseeing express bus "Yufurin" : Arrive at Yufuin from Beppu Station in 50 to 70 minutes. You can enjoy the Takaharu scenery while smoothly accessing the area without having to transfer.

4. [From Tokyo & Osaka] Fly to Oita Airport

If you are coming from Tokyo or Osaka, the shortest route is to fly to Oita Airport. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Haneda Itami to Oita Airport, with 14 direct flights per day. It takes about 1 hour from Itami Airport to Oita Airport, with 7 direct flights per day. (As of February 2026)

From Oita Airport to Yufuin : Take the Yufuin Liner airport access bus from Oita Airport to the Yufuin Station Bus Center, which takes approximately 55 minutes. There are five round trips per day, nonstop. (As of February 2026)
