About Kajo Park

Kajo Park sits on the historic grounds of the Yamagata Castle ruins. Spanning a vast 35.9 hectares (around 88 acres, roughly the size of 67 football fields!), it is Japan's fifth-largest castle site and the largest in the Tohoku region. Originally built by Shiba Kaneyori, founder of the Mogami clan, with construction dating back to 1357, only select historic remnants of the original fortress survive today.

Yamagata City has restored several major parts of the historic site, including the grand eastern gate, the inner gate, and a corner watchtower (yagura). These rebuilds capture how the fortress looked during the reign of Yoshiaki Mogami, the castle’s influential 11th lord.

The park also features an iconic bronze statue of Lord Mogami mounted on a rearing horse—an engineering marvel, famous for balancing on just two horse hooves, giving it the smallest contact point with the ground of any bronze statue in Japan.

On open days, visitors can enter the interior of the Ninomaru Higashi-Otemon Yagura free of charge (closed during winter). Inside, you'll find detailed exhibits outlining the history of archaeological excavations and the restoration process. Kajo Park is also a cultural hub, home to the Yamagata City Local History Museum, Yamagata Prefectural Museum, Yamagata Museum of Art, and Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum. It’s an ideal spot to pair a peaceful sakura walk with a deep dive into local history and art.

A Thousand Cherry Blossoms: A Pink Tunnel in Full Bloom

Around 1,200 cherry blossom trees—many over a century old—line the entire perimeter of Kajo Park. Plan for at least an hour to leisurely walk the grounds and take in the spectacular views.

Weekdays are perfect for a peaceful visit—ideal for snapping photos without crowds in the background or quietly soaking in the scenery. Weekends bring the park to life with festive energy, featuring traditional food stalls, appearances by Yamagata maiko, and special giveaways of matcha tea and local noodles.

Additionally, train tracks run right along the castle walls and moat near the main park entrance. If your timing is right, you can capture a rare photo of a train passing alongside the historic castle moat surrounded by cherry blossoms!

A park that maintains Yamagata Castle, a nationally designated historic site. There are about 1,500 cherry blossom trees in the park, some of which are over 600 years old, making it one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Yamagata City. In addition, there are facilities in the park where you can experience history, such as the Old Saiseikan, which is a Meiji-era building that was relocated from the former city hospital, and the Yamagata Prefectural Museum. and the Yamagata Museum of Art.
