Autumn Foliage Light-up at Kyoto's Rokuoin Temple

From November 15 to December 8, 2024, Rokuoin Temple in Kyoto will host special autumn night viewings featuring elegant lighting that highlights the seasonal charm of this renowned Zen temple.

Following a successful event last year, Rokuoin is set to dazzle visitors once again with its beautiful gardens, illuminating the impressive stone-paved pathway that guides guests from the everyday world into the serene ambiance of the temple, through the mountain gate, and beyond!

Highlights of the temple include a flat-style dry landscape garden that beautifully incorporates the scenic backdrop of Arashiyama—the first of its kind in Japan—as well as hall that enshrines sacred relics.

Visitors will also enjoy the vibrant autumn leaves, along with pine and mokkoku trees, all bathed in a gentle light that enhances the sophisticated beauty of this historic Zen temple.

Founded in 1380 by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358-1408), Rokuoin is known as one of the oldest and finest ancient temples in the western Kyoto region.

Located just a 20-minute walk from Arashiyama's Bamboo Grove, visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll to the temple in the afternoon before experiencing the breathtaking autumn foliage illuminated at night.

Once at the temple, guests can sip Hayami-style matcha tea and savor traditional Japanese sweets in a tatami room (please note that booking is required!).

On weekends, visitors can look forward to a traditional comedy performance known as Kyogen for added entertainment.

The temple itself was rebuilt after being lost during the Onin and Bunmei Wars. Its landscape garden is designated as a scenic spot by the city of Kyoto, making it a hidden gem that bursts with beauty during both cherry blossom season and autumn foliage.

Please note that the night-time viewing is limited to 150 people per day (advance application required).
