The KitKat Chocolatory Ginza - Handmade Chocolate And Sweets
Do you love KitKat bars? Then you'll love the KitKat Chocolatory in Japan! They offer a great variety of limited edition KitKats. The Chocolatory in Ginza even includes a cafe space offering sweet delights including the special KitKats.
KitKats are available in most countries but the flavor often is limited to dark, milk and white chocolate. Japanese KitKats have risen to fame for their huge variety and are a popular souvenir amongst visitors. It is easy to understand why once you encounter the huge variety of limited edition KitKat that even includes varieties made from regional products only available in certain regions of Japan.
This year marks KitKat's 45th Anniversary and to celebrate, we have visited the KitKat Chocolatory in Ginza, Tokyo.
What is the KitKat Chocolatory?
The KitKat Chocolatory is a specialty store opened in collaboration with the Japanese chocolatier Yasumasa Takagi. He is the pastry chef of LE PATISSIER TAKAGI and has created many unique flavors for KitKat over the years.
The KitKat Chocolatory is all about taking the popular chocolate bar to another level and giving it a high-quality taste and feel. Here you can buy and taste a variety of special edition KitKat bars you can't find in any Japanese supermarkets or convenience stores.
As of now, there are eight Chocolatory stores Japan-wide. However, only the Chocolatory in Ginza and the one in Hiroshima house a cafe space offering a special cafe menu as well.
KitKat Chocolatory Ginza Cafe - Creamy Hot Chocolate and Handmade Sweets
Everything in the KitKat Chocolatory Cafe is handmade. From the delicious little cakes over the drinks to the parfaits, which actually include KitKats. The decoration is very on brand and I felt like I just stepped into a KitKat box when I entered.
One of their best selling items are the cakes, especially the gateau chocolate cake. These don't include any KitKat bars but are part of the delicious handmade experience KitKat wants to offer their customer with the KitKat Chocolatory. They also have savory items in the form of sandwiches as well as high-quality matcha.
The Ruby Hot Chocolate is inspired but KitKat Japans Ruby Sublime Bar, which was first released last year. This special KitKat is covered in ruby chocolate made from ruby cocoa beans. The chocolate is still very rare and was first launched through KitKat. It has a sweet, creamy and slightly sour flavor.
The hot chocolate is served in an espresso cup alongside a KitKat SUBLIME RUBY. The color of both is a vivid pinkish red and I couldn't help but think of it as a perfect valentines day treat. The hot chocolate was thick and scrumptious and the ruby chocolate is enhanced with raspberry puree. It felt like drinking a melted down ruby chocolate smoothy.
The Supreme Matcha Parfait consists of creamy layers of handmade matcha ice cream separate crunchy chocolate cookie crumbles, rich matcha sponge cake and pieces of KitKat SUBLIME MATCHA's. The parfait is topped with freshly whipped cream, dried berries, sweet black beans and a KitKat SUBLIME BITTER.
The matcha ice cream was one of the best I have ever tried in Japan. It is rich, creamy and strong in flavor. It mixed well with the other ingredients and it was a pleasant flavor and texture experience to get a piece of the SUBLIME MATCHA in the mixture every once in a while.
The KitKat Chocolatory in Ginza offers two parfaits. The other parfait is the "I ♡ FRUITS Parfait". It includes several layers of various fruits as well as fruit-flavored ice cream and is topped with three different fruit flavored SUBLIME KitKats.
Their Parfaits have a very generous size and I can imagine that they can be easily shared between two people if you wish to do so.
Chocolatory Shop - Special KitKat Flavors and Types
Let me introduce the special flavors and products available at the KitKat Chocolatory as of March, 2019. Please note that this line-up might change according to season and demand.
Chocolatory Special KitKats
"Chocolatory Special Butter" has a buttery white chocolate flavor and has been part of the line up for years. "Chocolatory Special Strawberry and Maple" is the other popular flavor that has been around for a long time. The cream between the wafers is maple flavored and it is covered in strawberry flavored chocolate.
In some of the gift boxes you can also get "Chocolatory Special Raspberry and Pistachio" which has rasberry flavored cream and is covered in pistachio flavored chocolate. This flavor used to be available for seperate purchase but isn't at the moment.
The Chocolatory in Ginza also has some specials you can get at outside the specialty shop such as the sake and umeshu (plum liquor) flavored KitKats.
I ♡ FRUITS KitKat
I ♡ FRUITS KitKats are covered in fruit flavored white chocolate. They are not available as single packs, only in gift boxes. The I ♡ FRUITS boxes include Strawberry, Cassis, Raspberry, Passionfruit, and Yuzu flavored KitKats
SUBLIME KitKat
Carefully created by Yasumasa Takagi himself, the KitKat SUBLIME represent what the KitKat Chocolatory is all about. A luxurious version of the beloved snack. KitKat SUBLIME comes in milk, bitter, white, ruby, raw cocoa, and matcha. The make the perfect special gift for any KitKat lover.
Recently KitKat has also launched SUBLIME Volcanic which is made from rare volcanic chocolate. Volcanic chocolate is grown on the volcanic islands. The soild they are grown in is rich in volcanic ashes and minerals which give the cocoa beans an earthy, deep flavor.
Volcanic chocolate only makes up 0.2% of the worlds chocolate production and KitKat is one of the rare brands using it in their products. This is definitely not your average dark chocolate.
Moleson KitKat
Created as a small dessert in itself, KitKat Moleson is essentially SUBLIME KitKats covered in nuts and dried fruits encased in chocolate. The different textures make for a unique flavor experience.
The Moleson MATCHA combines Japans traditional flavors of matcha, azuki beans, puffed rice, and dried yuzu. If you love traditional Japanese sweets you should definitely give this one a try!
Taste the Incredible World of KitKat
KitKat Chocolatory offers so much more than just unique flavors and items. It is like stepping into a magical KitKat world. If you like KitKats, a visit to the KitKat Chocolatory should definitely be on your list of places to visit!
