MEZURASHI mountain pass , located on the old Wakayama Kaido road, is a historic site from the Kokubun legend, where the gods Amaterasu Omikami and Ameno Koyane no Mikoto, who appear in Japanese mythology, are said to have decided the border between Yamato and Ise.

The " MEZURASHI mountain pass Walking Course", which includes historical sites such as MEZURASHI mountain pass , is a course that starts and ends at the roadside station "Iitaka Station" and was certified as one of the "New 100 Best Walking Trails of Japan: Historical Trails" in September 2015.

This 1-2 hour course has few ups and downs and is a popular walking course because anyone can easily visit the historical sites. Easy-to-understand course maps are available at the Iitaka Station Information Office, so you can park your car at Iitaka Station and enjoy a casual walk.

Roadside station "Iitaka Station"

The starting point, roadside station "Iitaka Station", is a fully-equipped facility with a vegetable shop, a taiyaki shop, a bakery, and even a park. Of particular note is the natural hot spring "Iitaka no Yu". It is a rare place to find a hot spring inside a roadside station. We recommend taking a bath at the end of your walk.

Onigiri shop "Yasohachiya"

We recommend buying rice balls at Yasohachiya, a tenant store at the roadside station "Iitaka Station."

When you go to the front of the store, you will see a row of delicious looking rice ball samples. The rice used for the rice balls is a blend of about 10 types of rice harvested from the rice fields.

There are various types of rice, but the "Matsusaka Beef Shigure" is one of the recommended dishes. It is cooked with plenty of beef from Iinan Town (the town next to Iitaka Town), the birthplace of Matsusaka beef. The beef shigure is luxurious with a strong meaty flavor. Needless to say, the rice was very delicious.

Walking Course

Once you enter the walking course, the air changes instantly. Almost everything you see is green. Looking up, the sunlight filtering through the trees is beautiful. Even on a summer day, you can feel the refreshing sensation of walking through a cool mist.

Whether you look to the right or left, above or below, everything is as beautiful as a painting. It is quiet, and the sound of birds occasionally echoes in the silence.

MEZURASHI mountain pass

During the Edo period (1603-1868), MEZURASHI mountain pass was also used as a pilgrimage route to Ise.

The place between the rocks is enveloped in deep silence, and soft air passes through.

When I touched the rock surface, contrary to its rough appearance, it felt moist and like my hand was sticking to it.

It has a calm feel that is different from the manly atmosphere seen from the outside.

Upstream of the Kushida River

This is the upper reaches of the Kushida River, where the water is a deep blue. The blue of the Kushida River flowing through the greenery is very beautiful.

There are helpful information boards everywhere, so you can walk around with confidence.

There were no cars on the walking course and the path was easy to walk on, so even small children could join in.
