Kyu-Shiba-rikyu YAKAI: Enjoy Garden Light-ups, Art, and Dining
Tokyo’s Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens will host a special night event from May 20 to May 23, 2026.
The Kyu-Shiba-rikyu YAKAI transforms this historic "tide-in" garden into a cinematic, walkable artwork. By layering light, sound, and digital projection across sculptural stones, stone lanterns, and mounded hills, the production reimagines Edo-period stories as living memory.
Below, we introduce the highlights of this immersive event.
Art Installations Through the Garden

The garden’s history is revealed through several installations.
Wisteria imagery depicts drifting blooms, while a low snow-viewing lantern (yukimi-dōrō) recalls the site's seaside origins. Also, a dry-waterfall illumination brings focus to the historic stonework.
A Full-Garden Illumination Show

From 19:00, lighting sequences shift every 20 minutes, culminating in a finale starting at 21:00 that links individual installations into a unified narrative of memory and place.
A Guided Tour of the Nakajima Island

For the first time, this special night event invites visitors to Nakajima Island.
Here, stone groupings inspired by the spiritual mountains of Ryozen and Horai are bathed in soft light.
To ensure an intimate encounter with the garden’s focal point, sessions are limited to 10 people on a first-come, first-served basis (day-of registration).
Enjoy the YAKAI Evening Dining

Evening food stalls located near the wisteria trellis offer a chance to dine while gazing at the illuminated garden.
These event-exclusive menus are available in limited quantities and may sell out. Service runs from 18:30 to 21:00 (last order).
