Enoshima Lanterns 2025, an annual summer light-up event on Enoshima Island, will be held from July 19 to August 31, 2025. Easy to reach from Tokyo, the island is just off the coast of Kamakura, making it a perfect summer day trip destination.
Enoshima Lanterns is a summer event centered around the illumination of Enoshima Shrine and featuring thousands of small and large lanterns, creating a gentle, magical glow across Enoshima.
At various locations such as Enoshima Shrine, Samuel Cocking Garden, and Iwaya Cave in Enoshima, you can enjoy beautiful, sparkling night light shows.
Among the most eye-catching features is the "Light Scroll"—a light installation art displayed on the stage of Enoshima Shrine, which visitors can see by walking straight across the bridge leading to Enoshima.
This light display begins at the main gate of Enoshima Shrine and follows along the stone steps, centered around main prayer hall. This picture scroll is inspired by the legend of Enoshima, "Enoshima Engi," passed down through generations.
The performance is divided into two phases: the first and second, each showcasing different light and shadow effects.
The first phase of the event (July 19 to July 26) centers around the main shrine gate, projecting colorful patterns in red, green, blue, and purple, creating designs reminiscent of traditional paper-cutting art.
Additionally, a brand-new performance themed around "Summer Night Moon" during the summer sunset hours has been introduced. Using light, it vividly depicts the sea, clouds, and twinkling moon, adding vibrant colors to the shrine gate.
At the venue, soothing and refreshing music accompanies the displays, creating a relaxed and joyful atmosphere where visitors can leisurely enjoy the dreamy scenery.
The second phase of the event (from July 27 to August 31) features a light-guided performance along the route from the shrine gate to the stone stairs.
Before ascending the stone steps to the shrine hall, ukiyo-e artworks with Enoshima motifs are projected onto flowing fabrics that sway like elegant garments. Simultaneously, the sound of shell-decorated wind chimes creates a refreshing and cool atmosphere.
Additionally, in 2025, the lighting at the summit park of Enoshima, Samuel Cocking Garden, will be illuminated. The rich natural scenery becomes even more dazzling under the lights, featuring a new display centered around shining flowers.
Decorated with shimmering floral patterns, the lanterns blend harmoniously with the surrounding nature. This exhibition will continue throughout the entire period of the first phase of the event. It is recommended to take a leisurely walk down to the foot of Seacandle Mountain to enjoy a cool evening stroll.
