Togakushi: Discover Nagano's Ninja Culture

Ever since watching Naruto, I’ve been fascinated by ninjas. To me, they always carried an air of mystery, existing as a unique presence separate from the rest of the world.
So, when I visited Nagano, a trip to Togakushi—renowned as the home of the ninja—was absolutely mandatory.
The ninjas here belong to the Togakushi-ryu school, and all their secrets are hidden deep within the Togakushi Ninja Museum and the Ninja Trick Mansion (Karakuri Yashiki).
Besides the history-rich Togakushi Shrine, the Togakushi Ninja Museum is one of the best places to visit in Togakushi, a mountainous area in Nagano.
Exploring the Togakushi Ninja Museum

When I first heard the word "museum," I pictured a small, standard building. To my surprise, it turned out to be more like a miniature ninja village divided into various activity zones.
Admission is 700 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

Because our time was limited, we couldn't fit in the cultural exhibits, like the museum and the folklore pavilion.
My companion and I had only one goal in mind: head straight for the Ninja Trick Mansion and conquer it!
Togakushi Ninja Trick Mansion: An Endless Stream of Ninja Experiences

Upon arriving at the Trick House, you first take off your shoes and place them on the rack, then show your ticket to head inside! The rules are simple, giving off a vibe very similar to a real-life escape room.
Each room is packed with layers of tricks and hidden mechanisms, featuring doors that look nothing like the ones we see in everyday life. If you can find the exits, break through the series of challenges, and ultimately escape the residence, your mission is a complete success.
It might seem bizarre, but this is exactly how a real ninja residence operates. Hidden doors are never out in the open; instead, they are cleverly concealed where you’d least expect them—blended into the walls, tucked behind hanging scrolls, or hidden beneath tea tables.
Even when an exit looks like a perfectly normal door, it won't open with a simple turn of a knob. To survive this mansion, you’ll need to let your imagination run wild and think outside the box!

Why go to the trouble of installing so many hidden doors? The answer lies in survival: they made escaping effortless while leaving enemies entirely disoriented.
In an authentic ninja home, weapons were strategically cached inside these secret passageways for a swift counterattack or a rapid retreat.
Legend has it that a single traditional residence could contain over a dozen hidden doors and traps—a true masterclass in calculated deception.

With multiple stages that ramp up in difficulty, the Togakushi Ninja Trick Mansion offers a thrilling and immersive challenge.
The most unique feature is the slanted room; the moment you step inside, you feel an instant wave of dizziness. Fortunately, as long as you avoid looking up and focus on the tatami mats on the floor, the sensation passes.
From there, you just have to work your way up the slope to reach the exit. This room is easily the most entertaining stage in the house and is perfect for a big group of friends to experience together.
Practice Shuriken Throwing Techniques in the Ninja Dojo

Outside the Trick House, there is a shuriken-throwing dojo where visitors can try their hand at throwing ninja stars. Having tried it myself, I can honestly say it’s quite difficult!

The shuriken aren't heavy, but they really test your technique; hitting the target takes a lot of practice. Be sure to test your skills at the dojo and see if you have the natural talent to be a ninja!
