Nishimura Coffee Shop started with just three tables and is one of Kobe's famous coffee shops beloved by locals. It's a must-visit for anyone who wants to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee.
Nishimura Coffee is a coffee shop that was opened by founder Kiyoko Kawase in 1948 after the Second World War. Originally it was a shop where customers could enjoy sweets and Japanese tea that had been purchased from the shop, but coffee was added to the menu after a regular customer requested that they serve coffee.
Although Kawase was a novice when it came to coffee, he learned about it with the help of those around him and opened a coffee shop with just three tables.
The first shop to open was Nishimura Coffee Nakayamate Main Branch. The German timber frame-style building is a landmark, and many tourists visiting the Kitano area stop by.

"Kitanozaka Nishimura Coffee Shop" on Kitanozaka was Japan's first members-only coffee shop until 1995, and was frequented by many famous people. It is now open to the public.
Among the many stores, Kitanozaka Nishimura Coffee Shop is known for its "Iced Coffee in an Ice Container" (2,000 yen), which is only available from July to August and is a hot topic every year. This has been on the menu since 1974, when it was a members-only coffee shop, but after being introduced on social media, it spread by word of mouth and is now known as a summer staple at the shop.

At Nishimura Coffee Shop, their popular blended coffee is made with Miyamizu, a famous spring from Nada. The founder, Mr. Kawase, had the idea that "if you brew coffee with good water, it will taste good," and after searching around, he finally found Miyamizu, which is also used in Nada sake breweries. Fresh Miyamizu drawn from a well is still delivered to each store every morning.
The passion for coffee, "wanting customers to drink delicious coffee," is still carried on at Nishimura Coffee Shop today.
Now, among the many stores, this time we would like to introduce Nishimura Coffee Shop Hankyu-mae Store (hereinafter referred to as Hankyu-mae Store), which was expanded and renovated in 2022.
The restaurant is divided into the first floor and the basement, and mainly has tables that seat 2 to 4 people. It is also a short walk from the station, so it is often used by businessmen. It is located just a short walk from the station, so it is popular with business people.

The Hankyu-mae branch is the first Nishimura Coffee store to offer food menu items such as pasta.
The most popular food menu is the "Plate Set" (1,500 yen), which changes monthly. There are about four types of menu, including "Curried Chicken", "Ash Parmentier", "Sauteed Pork with Garlic Sauce", and "Hamburg Steak".
There are also plenty of set menus, such as "Roast beef salad" (1,500 yen) and "Gratin set" (1,650 yen). The breakfast set (from 800 yen / served from 9:00 to 11:30) based on the concept of "a hearty breakfast that rivals that of a first-class hotel" is also popular.
One of the features of the "Hankyumae store" is that you can enjoy cakes and baked goods from "Cession," a confectionery workshop in Mikage run by "Nishimura Coffee Shop." Each item is available for takeout, so they are recommended as souvenirs for your visit or for sightseeing in Kobe.
The Orangekuchen (580 yen/takeout 480 yen), a popular item at Secession since it first opened, is a baked confectionery with a bitter taste and a subtle orange scent.
Additionally, the Käsekuchen (580 yen/takeout 480 yen), made with rich cheese dough and baked with blueberries, is the most popular item at Secession.

In addition, the Hankyu Mae store also focuses on takeout menus, and they offer soft serve ice cream made with non-homogenized milk from Hikami. The cones are made with Secession's special langue de chat cookies! The cones are also very delicious, so be sure to try them during the hot season.
Nishimura Coffee Shop has nine stores, mainly in Kobe, and each one strives to provide comfortable service and upholds the founding philosophy of treating customers with care.
In May 2023, the online shopping site was revamped, and now you can purchase coffee and baked goods that were previously only available in-store. If you are looking for a gift item for the summer or winter holidays, why not give the taste of this famous Kobe shop as a present?
