What is a museum?

Before we get into the introduction of the building... What image comes to mind when you hear the word art museum?

The role of an art museum is to preserve and manage art, including paintings and sculptures, and to continue to communicate the appeal of that art for a long time. In other words, the artwork inside the building is basically the main character. Some people may feel this way, even unconsciously.

but! The "art" here at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art begins on the outside of the building, before you even enter the building.

History of Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art

The Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art was formerly known as the Tairei Memorial Kyoto Museum of Art.

During the Meiji period, the land of Kyoto changed completely after the capital was moved to Tokyo. The enthronement ceremony for Emperor Showa was held in Kyoto instead of Tokyo, in order to bring the town back to life. The current Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art was built as a memorial.

It was completed in 1933. It is the oldest existing public art museum building in Japan.

The main building is designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property (building).

Lots of unique attractions

The roof visible at the top of the building in the photo looks like the ``tiles'' seen in Japanese architecture, but it is actually made of copperplate. A Western-style brick wall with a Japanese-style design that looks like tiles. While taking advantage of the uniqueness of tiles that give the impression of Japanese architecture, the combination of brickwork seen in foreign architecture is very impressive.

This style that combines Japanese and Western styles is called the "Imperial Crown Style."

Please take a look at the building design as a work of art!

No matter where you take a photo at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, it will become a picture.
