What is Mitsumine Shrine?

Mitsumine Shrine is a shrine located in Mitsumine, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, and is one of the three Chichibu shrines, along with Chichibu Shrine and Hodosan Shrine.

The shrine has a long history, and is said to have begun when Emperor Keikō ordered Yamato Takeru, who was sent to pacify the eastern provinces by pacifying the country. On his way from Kai Province (Yamanashi) through Kozuke Province (Gunma) to Usui Pass, he climbed Mt. Mitsumine and saw the pure and beautiful mountains and rivers. He then enshrined Izanagi and Izanami, the gods who gave birth to the country.

Later, it is said that the shrine was given the name "Mitsumine no Miya" in recognition of the three mountains of Mt. Shiraiwa, Mt. Myoho, and Mt. Kumotori.

It is also said that a wolf (mountain dog) guided Emperor Yamato Takeru on his journey, and it is enshrined together with the wolf as a messenger of the gods.
