Cherry Blossoms and Koyasan

Cherry blossoms are flowers that have captivated people's hearts since ancient times.

As the snow melts, the signs of spring are beginning to show in Koyasan. During this season, you can enjoy the beautiful spring scenery with cherry blossoms in full bloom, adorning ancient temples. Strolling while gazing at the cherry blossoms and taking a break with delicious Japanese sweets along the way. Why not visit the beautiful Koyasan this spring to spend some quality time?

This article introduces the popular cherry blossom spots in Koyasan and lesser-known hidden spots for cherry blossom viewing. At the end of the article, there is also some information on special discounts, so be sure to read until the end!

Kongobu-ji Temple

In Koyasan, there have been many sakura trees that have been carefully preserved for generations within the precincts of each temple. Strolling around these famous cherry blossoms is a blissful time, unique to spring.

Among them, the weeping sakura tree planted at Kongobu-ji, the head temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, particularly captivates visitors. The branches gracefully droop from a height of about 6-meters, and the sight of the entire tree covered in delicate pink flowers is breathtakingly beautiful.

At Danjo Garan, which is home to historical buildings such as the Kondo Hall, Mieido Hall, and Higashi, centered around the shining vermilion Konpon Daito Pagoda, cherry blossoms begin to bloom in various places within the temple grounds with the arrival of spring, creating a serene spring scene.

There are also historically significant cherry trees in this sacred place, one of which is the Taimen Sakura. It is said to have been planted in the Heian period at the spot where Taira no Kiyomori, who was in charge of the restoration of the Konpon Daito Pagoda, visited and saw an incarnation of Kobo Daishi appear mysteriously. Today, the magnificent blossoms bloom in front of the Chumon Gate. You can also see the Saigyo Sakura, which is said to have been planted by the famous poet Saigyo Hoshi himself, in front of the Zammaido Hall beyond the Higashi.
