Kongobu-ji Temple

Danjo Garan

At Danjo Garan, which is home to historical buildings such as the Kondo Hall, Mieido Hall, and Higashi, centered around the shining vermilion Konpon Daito Pagoda, cherry blossoms begin to bloom in various places within the temple grounds with the arrival of spring, creating a serene spring scene.

There are also historically significant cherry trees in this sacred place, one of which is the Taimen Sakura. It is said to have been planted in the Heian period at the spot where Taira no Kiyomori, who was in charge of the restoration of the Konpon Daito Pagoda, visited and saw an incarnation of Kobo Daishi appear mysteriously. Today, the magnificent blossoms bloom in front of the Chumon Gate. You can also see the Saigyo Sakura, which is said to have been planted by the famous poet Saigyo Hoshi himself, in front of the Zammaido Hall beyond the Higashi.
