Takeya is a well-known discount department store in the Ueno area, loved for its incredible variety of products available at affordable prices.
The simplest and clearest way to get from Ueno Station to Takeya is to walk along Showa Dori Street. Takeya is easy to distinguish by its lilac building exterior.
The notable feature along this route is an elevated road above the street, which serves as the most prominent landmark. Below is a detailed walking route description:
When you arrive at Ueno Station (JR or Shinkansen), it is recommended to exit from the Central Gate (Chuo ticket gate).
After passing through the ticket gate, turn left and walk straight, then take the escalator up to the large bridge in front of the station.
After reaching the large bridge, you will see a large red art installation. At this point, you need to transfer from the art installation to the passage on the right and head toward the stairs in front of the APA HOTEL.
Descending the stairs and walking along Showa Dori, you will see the elevated structure above the road.
This elevated highway is a distinctive feature of Showa Dori, and walking beneath the elevated road along the sidewalk will lead you in the direction of Okachimachi and Takeya.
If you are taking the Tokyo subway, use Exit 3 to get to ground level. Once outside, you will be on Showa Dori, so just walk straight ahead.
Continuing along Showa Dori and walking straight ahead for about 10 to 12 minutes, you will reach the area near Naka-Okachimachi Station, where you will notice some more prominent buildings on the east side of the road.
Among them, some signboards are purple, indicating Takeya.
The signboards are very easy to recognize, so you can immediately find the entrance to Takeya.
Inside Takeya, there is a wide variety of products, including clothing, miscellaneous goods, cosmetics, and more. It is a popular shopping destination for both locals and tourists.
If you get tired from walking, you can also take a break at a nearby restaurant before continuing your exploration.
Ueno-Okachimachi Station is located on the Toei Oedo Line and is very close to Takeya.
You can reach Takeya by passing through Naka-Okachimachi Station underground, which is a very convenient route, especially on days with bad weather when you want to avoid the rain.
Start from the "JR Okachimachi Ticket Gate" exit at Ueno-Okachimachi Station, then turn right and walk toward Exit 3.
Along the way, you will pass a fork in the path: on the left is a staircase going up, and on the right is toward Naka-Okachimachi Station on the Hibiya Line. Please proceed to the right and take the escalator upward.
After riding the escalator and passing through the station, you will see a map sign as shown in the above picture.
Once you come up from Exit 3 on the side, you will arrive at Showa Dori.
Once you step outside onto the ground level, you will see the Mitsui Sumitomo Bank signboard.
Then turn left into a small alleyway, and after walking about 100 meters, you will see the Takeya building directly ahead.
Okachimachi Station is the closest JR Yamanote Line station to Takeya, and it only takes about 5 minutes on foot!
Starting from the North Exit of Okachimachi Station, turn right and walk along Kasuga Dori heading east.
Soon, you will see the Takeya signboard, and just turn at the corner to see Takeya.
Ameya-Yokocho is a lively shopping street located between Okachimachi and Ueno Station. It is very close to Takeya, only about a 3 to 5-minute walk.
When shopping at Ameya-Yokocho and you want to go to Takeya, just walk straight along the elevated railway. Continue walking until you reach Okachimachi Station, which is at the intersection of Kasuga Dori and Ameya-Yokocho.
Then, head in the direction of the arrow along Kasuga Dori. Walk until you see the very prominent Takeya signboard on Showa Dori, and turn the corner — Takeya will be right in front of you.
