[Best time to see] When do the lilies in Tsukioka Park bloom?

Tsukioka Park is located on a hill overlooking the city. Approximately 10,000 lilies bloom in the park's flower plaza every summer. It is a popular spot where many people come to take walks and photograph the vibrantly colored lilies. The lily fields are divided into two fields, an upper and lower level, and the best time to see them is from late June to early July and from mid-July to early August . It is also a popular walking spot, with good access, about 10 minutes by car from the Horinouchi IC on the Kan'etsu Expressway and about 2 km from JR Echigo Horinouchi Station.

Why Uonuma City? The reason it is the largest lily producing area in the prefecture...

Uonuma City is one of the leading lily producing areas in Japan, and boasts a 60-70% share of the prefecture's shipping volume .

The Horinouchi district of Uonuma City was the pioneer of lily cultivation. Uonuma is a heavy snow area, so fields can only be used during the snow-free season. It is said that this is why people started cultivating flowers, which could be profitable in a limited period of time .

Lilies are plants whose bulbs are planted in the fall and bloom in the spring. However, Uonuma is one of the areas in Japan that receives the heaviest snowfall, which means that the shipping season is delayed. As a result, we were able to ship at a time when there were no shipments from other production areas.

Furthermore, by utilizing this natural phenomenon, they have established what is said to be the world's first bulb refrigeration technology, making it possible to ship bulbs from August to November, later than the normal flowering period. This natural environment and the establishment of bulb refrigeration technology are the factors that have led to the area's growth into one of the leading production areas in the country .

Today, there are around 40 lily farms throughout the city, mainly in the Horinouchi district, but also in the Koide and Hirokami districts, cultivating around 150 varieties . Lily varieties can be broadly classified into "Euphorbia lilies," "LA lilies," "Oriental lilies," "OT lilies," and so on, and there are many other varieties within each. Uonuma City lilies are sold nationwide as cut flowers and are treated as luxury items due to their high quality. However, some are sold at affordable prices at direct sales outlets within the city . The park is also packed with play equipment that even small children can enjoy. There's also a water area where you can splash around safely and a huge grassy area , so there's plenty to do besides just viewing the lilies. Children can play to their heart's content.
