ZEN NIGHT at Tofukuji Temple

ZEN NIGHT Tofukuji is a premium nighttime viewing event held at the historic Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto from May 29 to July 5, 2026.

This immersive sound art experience marks the third iteration of the popular ZEN NIGHT series, following highly successful runs at Kenninji Temple in 2024 and Kenchoji Temple in 2025.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of early summer in Kyoto, the event blends centuries-old Zen philosophy with modern brain science. By combining light, nature, and VIE’s proprietary Neuromusic, the experience is designed to help visitors condition their brains, reduce stress, and achieve deep relaxation.

With previous events drawing over 50,000 visitors, including a massive 30% turnout from international visitors, this year's edition at Tofukuji is poised to be an unmissable highlight of the Kyoto summer travel season.

Experience Tomorrow's Meditation: Neuromusic Zazen

Tofukuji Zen Hall

A major highlight of this year's event is the debut of the Neuromusic Zazen experience, taking place inside Tofukuji’s historic Zen Hall (Zendo). Rebuilt in 1347, the structure stands as Japan’s oldest and largest surviving Zen meditation training hall.

Inside this sacred space, visitors can participate in a high-tech meditation experience by wearing wearable brainwave-measuring devices.

As you meditate, your real-time brainwave data is transformed into captivating digital patterns and ambient sounds. This seamless fusion of technology and ancient Zen wisdom allows you to literally see and hear your mind entering a state of tranquil relaxation.

Developed by neurotechnology company VIE Inc., Neuromusic is scientifically engineered audio designed to amplify or attenuate specific brainwave frequencies. It acts directly on the human nervous system to naturally trigger states of deep relaxation or heightened focus.

Stunning Night Illuminations Across the Temple Grounds

During the event period, the iconic landmarks of Tofukuji Temple will be dramatically transformed by mystical light and sound productions, offering a sensory journey unlike anything experienced during regular daytime hours.

Tsutenkyo Bridge: The Path of Refreshing Breezes

Tsutenkyo Bridge

Walk across the famous Tsutenkyo Bridge and look down upon a vast sea of over 1,000 lush green maple trees.

The night breeze rustling through the leaves is synchronized with ambient Neuromusic, creating a beautiful harmony of sight, sound, and touch.

Hojo Garden Hakkai: Dance of the Wind Dragon

Hojo Garden Hakkai

The dry landscape garden will be illuminated by shifting, ethereal light displays. Natural sounds of water and environment layer softly over scientific audio tracks, guiding visitors into a deep state of sensory mindfulness.

Hatto (Dharma Hall): Standing Statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and Blue Dragon Painting

Dharma Hall at Tofukuji

In an exclusive nighttime viewing treat, the temple's main hall will open its doors in the dark.

The majestic, solemn figure of the Standing Statue of Shakyamuni Buddha and the colossal, swirling painting of the Blue Dragon on the ceiling will vividly emerge from the darkness.
