Asakusa Culture and Lights 2026: Free Light Shows at Sensoji
Visit Sensoji Temple for ASAKUSA CULTURE AND LIGHTS 2026 (October 30–November 3). Enjoy free projection mapping, plus ticketed garden illuminations and art displays.
Free Night Event in Asakusa, Tokyo

Sensoji Temple in Tokyo’s Asakusa district will become the setting for ASAKUSA CULTURE & LIGHTS 2026, running from October 30 to November 3, 2026.
Produced by HITOHATA, the event brings the temple’s 1,400 years of history and culture to life through free projection mapping on its Main Hall and Hozomon Gate.
Visitors can also purchase tickets to explore the normally closed Denboin Garden and Ema Hall, with mist-filled scenery, evening illuminations, and historical artworks.
Projection Mapping at Sensoji's Main Hall and Hozomon Gate

For the first time, Sensoji’s Main Hall will host a projection mapping show, joining Hozomon Gate as one of this year’s two illuminated landmarks.

The displays draw inspiration from the temple’s large votive paintings, ukiyo-e artworks, and the Kanbun Engi, an illustrated scroll recounting Sensoji’s origins.

Two different shows, each approximately six minutes long, will alternate between the south-facing sides of the Main Hall and Hozomon Gate.

Viewing is free, with no advance registration required. The shows repeat from 18:00 to 21:30 each evening, so visitors can arrive at any point during these hours. Organizers recommend coming later in the evening to avoid the busiest opening period.
Denboin Garden: A Sea of Clouds and Evening Illuminations

A separate, ticketed special opening offers a rare chance to explore Denboin Garden, a designated Place of Scenic Beauty usually closed to the public.
During both daytime and evening hours, a sea-of-clouds effect will drift through the garden, adding a dreamlike atmosphere to its traditional scenery. The effect runs for approximately ten minutes every half hour between 9:00 and 20:30.

From 17:00 to 21:00, the evening program Kinryu Yakai transforms the garden with atmospheric lighting.
Visitors can also watch an original dance inspired by Sensoji’s Golden Dragon Dance. Approximately five-minute performances take place outside the Ema Hall every half hour from 17:00 to 20:00.
Special admission tickets allow daytime and evening visits, with re-entry permitted on the selected date.
Historical Artworks at the Ema Hall

The special opening also includes access to the Ema Hall, which houses approximately 50 large ema, or painted votive offerings.
These works include paintings by historical artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Hasegawa Settan, and Henmi (Kano) Kazunobu, offering a closer look at Sensoji’s artistic heritage.
The Ema Hall opens from 9:00 to 16:00, with last admission at 15:30. Visitors hoping to enjoy both the paintings and the evening garden illuminations can visit during the day and return later using the same ticket.
A limited number of tickets include the illustrated catalog The Ema of Sensoji Temple.
Special Prayer Ceremony and Restoration Tours
For a more in-depth experience, two additional programs are available with advance tickets.
On October 30 at 13:00, a premium special admission ticket includes a prayer ceremony at Sensoji’s Main Hall, a small wooden prayer tablet, Kannon incense, and admission to Denboin Garden and the Ema Hall. Tickets cost 12,000 yen, with places limited to 30 participants.
On October 31 and November 1, guided restoration tours offer access to normally closed areas of Denboin, an Important Cultural Property undergoing extensive conservation work.
The approximately 90-minute tours begin at 10:00 and 13:00 each day and cost 5,000 yen, with 10 participants per session. Admission to the garden and Ema Hall must be purchased separately.
Both programs are available to high school students and older.
