Suminoe Art Beat 2022 will be held for just one day on November 13 in Osaka. The festival will feature interactive exhibits, shows, and of course Florentijn Hofman’s surreal giant duck
For one day only, visitors to the Kitakagaya area of Osaka will be able to witness the surreal and amusing sight of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s 9.5 meter tall Rubber Duck floating in the harbor. Kitakagaya is the beloved duck’s hometown, and it makes its way back to Osaka each year for a visit.
The gigantic, inflatable sculpture is the face of Suminoe Art Beat, which will take place on Sunday, November 13 of this year.
The fun and lively art festival will also feature multiple art exhibits, youth stage performances, and a market run by Kitakagaya’s community farming project Minna Noeun.
Visitors will be able to experience a vivid digital art display by creator Haruhisa Nakatani, spanning the white walls of the exhibition space. This interactive exhibit will create colorful designs by tracing the individual movements of those in the space.
There will also be ceramic art displays, including a unique work by artist Yoshiko Naragino made up of over one hundred vividly decorated ceramic disks, as well as a unique ceramic-filled space by artist Maho Kitaura. All three artists are based in Kitakagaya.
Eagle-eyed visitors may be able to spot multiple duck-themed works in unexpected places such as on manhole covers, as well as the mini duck drone that will be whizzing through the venue.
There will also be a large, red double-decker London bus at the site, which guests will be able to enter.
There will be many great attractions for the whole family, including colorful stage shows, a unique art exhibition created by high school students, and a hands-on furniture-making workshop.
The event will take place at the Creative Centre Osaka, formally an important shipbuilding site. The site retains many of its original structures, and there will be a guided shipyard walk which will allow participants to access areas that are normally off limits to visitors.
