Tenjin Festival has a long history of over 1,000 years

In 951, two years after Tenmangu Shrine was established, a sacred spear was floated down the beach in front of the shrine, where a shrine was set up and a purification ceremony was held. The people of the shrine's domain then prepared a boat to welcome the float, which is said to be the beginning of the Tenjin Festival.

What happens at the Tenjin Festival?

The Tenjin Festival usually takes place over the course of about a month, from late June to July 25th, with various events taking place. The most exciting times are the Yoimiya festival on the 24th and the Honmiya festival on the 25th.

On the 25th, the main shrine hosts the Rikutogyo, a large procession of about 3,000 people, and the Funatogyo, a boat procession of many boats going back and forth on the Okawa River. As the sun sets, fireworks are set off, and the area is filled with a festive atmosphere.

What to see at Tenjin Festival?

The highlight of the festival is the votive fireworks at the finale of the Tenjin Festival. The original "Beni Ume" fireworks, which open in the shape of a plum blossom, as well as bonfires and paper lanterns, are reflected on the surface of the river, creating a beautiful and fantastical sight.
