Gifu Light Story 2025 is a unique light-up event taking place at Gifu Park from January 18 to 26. Experience the beauty of dazzling lanterns, glowing washi umbrellas, and mesmerizing 3D projections at Gifu Castle, Gifu Park, and Shoboji Temple.
Gifu City is hosting its enchanting annual light-up event, Gifu Light Story 2025, from January 18 to January 26, 2025.
The event will take place at two picturesque locations—Gifu Park and Shoboji Temple, which is home to the magnificent Great Buddha of Gifu. Visitors can expect breathtaking light displays that showcase Gifu’s rich cultural heritage through traditional crafts, including Gifu washi umbrellas and intricate lanterns.
As the sun sets and the stars shine, Gifu Park will come alive with a festive atmosphere reminiscent of cherished Japanese festivals.
The spectacular Kanmuki Gate of Love will be decorated with illuminated washi umbrellas and a striking semicircular pond that invites the graceful movement of koi fish, beautifully highlighted through intricate projection mapping.
As visitors pass through the enchanting Kanmuki Gate, they will be greeted by a captivating scene along the Festival Approach.
An artistic depiction of a gentle stream, brought to life through sophisticated projection mapping, extends approximately 50 meters.
Lush visuals—including colorful decorations of yo-yo balloons swaying gently in the breeze, koi fish gracefully swimming along the water's edge, and bursts of fireworks illuminating the night sky—transport attendees into a festive wonderland.
A highlight of Gifu Light Story 2025 is the Washi Umbrella Orchestra, a stunning installation featuring approximately 60 intricately crafted Gifu washi umbrellas.
Suspended in three dimensions, these beautiful umbrellas will be illuminated and will come to life with synchronized color changes that dance to the rhythm of accompanying music.
The Miracle Cliff serves as the grand finale of the Gifu Park area, featuring a breathtaking main projection mapping display. Standing 20 meters high, this awe-inspiring cliff transforms into a canvas for a dynamic light show that narrates the rich history of Gifu City.
Using advanced projection technology, historical tales and visuals will unfold dramatically across the cliff's surface, captivating audiences with stories of Gifu’s past and the cultural significance of the region.
In contrast to the vibrant festivities of Gifu Park, the Shoboji Temple Area offers a more solemn and tranquil atmosphere. Here, the majestic Great Buddha of Gifu, one of Japan's three great Buddhas, is illuminated to highlight its serene presence.
The soft glow of light displays creates a peaceful ambiance around the temple, inviting visitors to reflect and find solace in the quiet beauty of this spiritual site.
This year, around the Gifu Park area, food trucks will be available, featuring 10 vendors on weekends and 3 on weekdays. Enjoy warm meals while leisurely experiencing the illuminated story.
In conjunction with Gifu Light Story 2025, the Gifu Castle Panorama Night View offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the historical essence of Gifu Castle during its special opening.
On select dates—January 18, 19, 25, and 26—the castle will be open for free from 16:30 to 20:00, allowing guests to explore its picturesque grounds illuminated by twinkling lights and stunning night views.
For those seeking an elevated perspective, the Gifu Kinkazan Ropeway will provide its last descent at 20:30, offering access to panoramic views of the entire area.
Additionally, the observation deck will host a captivating light-up event titled Sky Flower Garden, where visitors can enjoy enchanting displays that beautifully illuminate the night sky, creating a perfect blend of nature and artistry.
To enhance the magical atmosphere of Gifu Light Story 2025, visitors will have the option to rent handheld lanterns.
This charming addition allows each participant to wander the festival grounds while carrying their own source of light, adding to the enchanting experience.
Visitors interested in exploring Gifu's rich history can take advantage of the special night opening at the Gifu City History Museum.
Conveniently located between Gifu Park and Shoboji Temple, the museum will be open during the Gifu Light Story period, allowing guests to explore its exhibitions free of charge.
