More Details about Tadanori Yokoo Art Tour

About the Artist "Tadanori Yokoo"

Yokoo was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1936 and is now 88 years old.

He says that the various paranormal experiences he had as a child led him to contemplate the world of death. He then worked as a graphic designer at a newspaper company. He began painting as a quest for self-identity, including his experiences as a graphic designer at a newspaper company.

He has also been active in many fields, including appearing on television as an actor, but since 1980 he has continued to be actively involved in the arts, producing and exhibiting a variety of works as a painter.

3 Reasons Why This Tour is Special

1. Lecture at the Yokoo Tadanori Museum of Contemporary Art

The first stop is the Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art, featuring a collection donated by the artist himself. The museum hosts seasonal exhibitions with changing themes. In 2025, it will present “Tadanori Yokoo’s Physical Manifesto” in spring and “Revival! Tadanori Yokoo’s Skull Festival” in fall, offering unique thematic experiences for visitors. Before exploring the exhibitions, a curator-led lecture provides insights into Yokoo and his works, allowing you to enjoy a more informed and discovery-filled visit.

2. Yokoo’s Art in a Traditional Japanese House on Teshima

The Teshima Island Yokoo House comprises three renovated traditional houses, each over 100 years old, plus a 14-meter-tall circular tower. Designer Yuko Nagayama incorporated red glass to add a painterly touch to the Miyoshi architectural style, highlighting the house’s central theme: “life and death.”

Aka (red), frequently used in Yokoo’s works, represents blood and life. Viewed through the red glass, the scenery on the other side transforms into a monochrome landscape, creating a sense of a boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary, between life and death.

The “Main House” features a ceiling of black glass and a floor of clear glass, allowing natural light to fill the space. Reflections of light and glass create ever-changing scenes, forming a dynamic landscape that evolves throughout the day.

3. Private Viewing at Teshima Island Art Museum

The Teshima Island Art Museum, by Rei Naito and Ryue Nishizawa, sits on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Shaped like a water droplet, its pillar-free concrete shell lets wind, light, and sound enter freely. A “fountain” forms inside throughout the day, and this tour includes a private viewing of the first drop, blending nature, art, and architecture in a constantly changing landscape.
