About the artist Tadanori Yokoo

Yokoo was born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1936 and is now 88 years old.

He says that he was inspired by the world of death through the various paranormal experiences he had as a child. He then worked as a graphic designer at a newspaper company. He began painting as a part of his exploration of the self, including his experiences as a graphic designer at a newspaper company.

He has also been active in many areas, including appearing on television as an actor, but since 1980 he has continued to be actively involved in the art world, producing a variety of works and holding exhibitions as a painter.

3 reasons why this tour is special

1. Lecture at Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art

The first place we visit is the Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art, whose collection of works were donated by the artist himself, and which holds exhibitions with different themes each season. In 2025, the museum will hold the "Tadanori Yokoo's Flesh Manifesto" exhibition in the spring and the "Revival! Tadanori Yokoo's Skull Festival" in the fall. You can enjoy exhibitions based on each theme. Before viewing, a lecture will be given by the curator. You can proceed with viewing the works with input about Yokoo and the exhibits, so you can spend your time making many discoveries.

2. Enjoy the old houses and Yokoo's works at the Teshima Island Yokoo House

Teshima Island Yokoo House is made up of three renovated traditional houses, each over 100 years old, and an additional 14-meter-tall circular tower. Designer Yuko Nagayama used red glass to add a painterly touch to the Miyoshi architectural expression, in an attempt to express the main theme of the house: "life and death."

"Aka" is a color often used in Yokoo's works, and it is also the color of blood, which symbolizes life. The scenery on the other side of the red glass appears as a monochrome landscape, as if it is the boundary between "ordinary and extraordinary," or "life and death."

In the "Main House," the ceiling is made of black glass and the floor is made of transparent glass, allowing natural light to pour in. Various scenes created by the reflection of light and glass are collaged in the artwork space, creating a landscape of the moment.

3. Teshima Island Art Museum also available for private viewing

The Teshima Island Art Museum, designed by artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa, is located on a hill in Teshima Island , Teshima, overlooking the Seto Naikai . The building, shaped like a drop of water just falling to the ground, is set in a corner of a rice terrace that was regenerated together with local residents. The concrete shell structure has no pillars in the space, and two openings in the ceiling allow the surrounding wind, sound, and light to directly enter the interior, creating an organic space where nature and the building resonate with each other. A "fountain" is born in the interior space throughout the day, and on this tour, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the moment when the first drop is born in a private setting. The scenery, where nature, art, and architecture are infinitely fused, offers infinite expressions as the seasons change and time flows.
