An Enchanting Concert and Weeping Cherry Trees at Heian Jingu Shrine
Heian Jingu Shrine invites you this spring to a week full of blooming beauty and entertainment: the Sakura Otoyo 2023 Concert, which coincides with the blooming time of the red weeping cherry trees.
Stroll under beautiful illuminated weeping cherry blossom trees on the grounds of Heian Jingu Shrine while experiencing the music of amazing performers such as gagaku (*1) master Hideki Togi.
*1 Gagaku: A type of Japanese classical music developed at the imperial court in the Heian period (795-1185).
Sakura Otoyo: A Popular Spring Event at Heian Jingu Shrine
Set in the historical heart of Kyoto, this magical concert has attracted over 300,000 visitors in its life. This popular event is making a comeback after four years and we are happy to see its return!
The concert was created by Kyoto Shimbun in 1989 as part of a project that celebrated the 1200th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. Due to the capital being moved to Tokyo and the devastating effects of the war, the citizens of Kyoto started to reconstruct the city with a great passion for their culture, history, and life. This concert series is one of these projects that came to define Kyoto as a cultural city.
Event Highlights: Weeping Cherry Blossom Trees and Live Music!
Every year at the beginning of April, the weeping cherry blossom trees can be seen reflecting off the pond, illuminated and colorful in the shrine's garden.
Seats have been purposely removed so that guests can take in all sights and sounds of this gorgeous concert and experience true magic.
Heian Jingu Shrine's nature is stunning and a variety of wonderful scenery can be enjoyed throughout the year. From the beautiful cherry blossoms in spring to gorgeous irises in early summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and icey snowscapes in winter, this shrine has it all!
This five-day concert brings a unique and fantastic range of performances each day of the week, making every day special. The performers and their scheduled days are as follows:
