Hotel Management Japan Co., Ltd. is a hotel management company that operates 23 hotels in Japan (total number of rooms: 7,506). In addition to its own brands, "Oriental Hotel" and "Hotel Oriental Express," the company also manages and operates a variety of hotels, including "Hilton," "Sheraton," and "Hotel Nikko."

Industry-academia collaboration project No. 4

The collaboration project with Nippon Engineering College began in 2020, and this year marks the fourth installment. Nippon Engineering College is a comprehensive technical college with 99 specialized courses across 34 departments in 6 colleges, including Nippon Engineering College in Ota Ward and Nippon Engineering College Hachioji in Hachioji.

The two accommodation plans being sold this time were selected from plans by 16 teams, the largest number ever, with a total of 66 participants: 22 first-year and 12 second-year students from the Hotel and Tourism course, and 32 first-year students from the Secretary/Administrative/e-Business course.

We set the challenge of "what can only a hotel in Kamata, Ota Ward do?" and evaluated the validity of the concept and whether the content was unique and not available at other hotels. We also took into account the presentation skills of the applicant and selected the overall best idea.

The project will be launched in earnest in May 2023 with a lecture by hotel staff on "The process of planning and commercializing hotel accommodation plans." This year, we have asked them to create accommodation plans that incorporate original ideas unique to Kamata, Ota Ward, targeting "Generation X men and women" born between 1965 and the early 1980s. Unlike the concept rooms that were sold at a limited rate of one room per day in the past three projects, we aim to create accommodation plans that can be sold in larger numbers.

In September, each team gave a presentation in front of the hotel staff, and the two plans that were selected were the "Nori Nori Plan" by a first-year student in the Hotel and Tourism course, and the "Kamata Sweets Tour Plan" by a first-year student from the Secretary/Administrative/e-Business course, who was selected for the first time. The two selected plans were divided among the students in each course, and they had many opportunities to meet, including online, to brush up on the content. As part of their classes, the students carried out a wide range of tasks, such as creating display materials such as posters and announcements, promoting the plans on social media, selecting special items, and negotiating with stores.

This project is part of the "Co-Creation Hotel" strategy, a regional co-creation strategy put forward by Hotel Management Japan Co., Ltd. Hotel Oriental Express Tokyo Kamata will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2024, and will continue to strive to be a hotel that discovers, creates, and develops the charm of the local community in order to continue to provide guests with a unique stay experience.

■ Team leader's comment

Hotel and Tourism Course 1st Year Students "Nori Nori Plan"

We never thought that our plan would be adopted, but we worked as a team to create a plan that could convey the charm of Kamata. We went to the "Omori Nori no Furusatokan" in Ota Ward and learned a lot not only about nori but also about Ota Ward, the birthplace of nori farming. We would like to recommend this place to anyone who wants to spend a day that is a little different from the usual.

Secretary/Administrative /eBusiness Course 1st Year Students "Kamata Sweets Tour Plan"

We put all our effort into the presentation and feel genuine happiness that the plan we came up with over the course of about three months was selected. Despite the lack of time due to overlapping with preparations for the school festival, our team members helped each other out and the preparations went smoothly, so we are filled with gratitude. We can confidently recommend these shops because we visited them ourselves and chose them. Please enjoy the delicious sweets and strolling around Kamata.

■Comments from the Nihon Kogakuin College teacher

This year's students are proactive and responsible. It was also impressive to see them working together and helping each other beyond their individual roles. This time, we have been negotiating with many stores, and we are taking on a difficult challenge, but I feel that communicating with many people outside of the school will help the students grow. The students have worked hard to create the concept rooms over the past three times, and their success has led to this year's project, which has been a very valuable experience for them.
