Kanazawa's unique scent elements

Kanazawa is a famous place for scents, with moderate humidity and temperature, perfect for enjoying scents. In this area where tea culture is flourishing, tea ceremony and incense ceremony were often enjoyed together.

``Koya'' has the Kyoka series, which is named after the literary giant ``Kyoka Izumi'' from Kanazawa Prefecture. Since many of his works are fantasy stories, he creates them so that when you hear the scent, you can feel a sense of separation from reality.

Scent was a luxury item

The culture of enjoying scents spread in Japan during the Kamakura period. A new way of enjoying the delicate scent of fragrant wood called ``monko'' was born. In the Muromachi period, a game called ``Kumiko'' began to be played, in which people listened to different scents and guessed which one they were. As the times changed, the ways to enjoy scents also expanded.

The fragrance can be broadly divided into ``Agarwood'' and ``Sandalwood''. Agarwood refers to a material that emits aromatic aroma from the accumulation of tree sap. Sandalwood, on the other hand, is a material whose scent is emitted from the trunk of the tree, and its scent remains the same from beginning to end even when lit.

Since these aromatic trees cannot be harvested in Japan, they were chopped into very small pieces and enjoyed the scent. It can be seen that in the past, ``fragrance'' was a luxury item.

Fragrance creation process

Aroma is expressed in terms of taste sensations such as ``sweet,'' ``sour,'' ``spicy,'' ``bitter,'' and ``salty.'' No two fragrant woods have the same scent. We separate these unknown fragrant trees and create scents.

Koya offers two types of scent experiences: ``Incense Bag Making'' and ``Incense Listening Experience.''

If you want to easily mix your favorite fragrance, we recommend ``Incense bag making'', and if you want to try a rare experience that has been held since the Muromachi period, we recommend ``Incense listening experience''.
