Half-day (AM) Nara Tour: World Heritage Temples and Sacred Deer
This is a fascinating half-day tour to Horyu-ji Temple, a place that conveys the splendor of ancient Japan. Horyu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is said to have been built by Prince Shotoku in the late 6th century and is the oldest wooden Buddhist temple in the world. The five-story pagoda and main hall are among the buildings that remain, and the pagoda in particular has withstood earthquakes and fires and boasts a history of over 1,300 years. Horyu-ji Temple has had a major impact on the development of Buddhist culture and is also famous as the place associated with Prince Shotoku. We will guide you through Horyu-ji Temple, which is surrounded by tranquil forests and where history and spirituality are beautifully combined.
After the meet, we will take a taxi to Horyuji Temple.
It is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku and Empress Suiko in the 15th year of the reign of Prince Shotoku (607). The Nihon Shoki records that the temple was burned down in the 9th year of the reign of Emperor Tenchi (670), and the current temple is thought to have been completed in the early 8th century. It has survived fires and natural disasters, and has been protected by the faith in Prince Shotoku, so it still retains its former appearance as the world's oldest surviving wooden building complex. The approach to the temple is lined with pine trees, and at the end of the approach is the Great South Gate (National Treasure). The temple grounds are largely divided into the Western Temple and the Eastern Temple, and there are 55 buildings that are National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties alone. The entire temple is surrounded by a wall called Ogaki (Important Cultural Property). The temple is laid out in a layout known as the Horyuji-shiki garan layout, with the Western Temple temple at the center of the temple lined with the five-story pagoda (National Treasure) and the Golden Hall (National Treasure), and the Middle Gate (National Treasure) and the Great Lecture Hall (National Treasure) are connected by a corridor (National Treasure). Heading east and passing through the Higashidaimon Gate (National Treasure), you can see the Toin Garan (Eastern Temple Complex) with its Yumedono Hall (National Treasure). In addition to the buildings, the temple also has a large collection of excellent Buddhist artworks, with 38 items and 150 pieces designated as national treasures alone, and approximately 3,000 pieces including Important Cultural Properties. As part of the Buddhist architecture of the Horyu-ji Temple area, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993.
