What is Tanabata?

The story of Tanabata originates from the Chinese legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi, who were separated by the Milky Way, but were allowed to meet once a year across the Milky Way on July 7th. The two got married, but began to neglect their work, which angered the Heavenly Emperor, who separated them across the Milky Way. However, touched by their deep love, the Heavenly Emperor allowed them to meet once a year.

The origin of Tanabata in Japan is said to have been introduced from China during the Nara period. In Japan, this legend became associated with the ancient custom of "Tanabata," a ceremony in which young girls make offerings to the gods and pray for a good harvest.

During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Tanabata festival in its modern form became widespread, when people began writing their wishes on strips of paper and attaching them to bamboo leaves.

Genji-koh also has bamboo decorations in the front lobby, and we have strips of paper ready for our guests to write their wishes on. Many of the strips of paper fluttering in the breeze contain heartwarming messages such as "May everyone spend their days with a smile on their face." Please come and take a look at the cool bamboo.
