What kind of place is Iki? 5 recommended spots to enjoy Iki in autumn

Iki is attractive for its natural beauty, with its blue sea and lush green mountains. Iki is strongly associated with summer, with beaches, swimming, and sea urchins, but there are also many places to enjoy from autumn to winter, such as beach walks, visiting shrines, Kagura, gourmet food, and hot springs.

This time, we will introduce 5 spots to enjoy Iki in the fall.

Sightseeing at Tatsunoshima Island

Tatsunoshima is an uninhabited island located about 10 minutes by boat from Katsumoto Port. It is also famous as a power spot. With beautiful emerald green sea and white sand, it has been selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Top 100 Swimming Beaches in Japan." You can enjoy the beauty of many natural formations, such as Wolf Rock, Sea Palace, Giant Mammoth Rock, Spouting Rock, the Great Folding Screen, and the cliffs of Hebigatani. A little trekking is recommended in autumn. It is a popular spot where you can experience a sense of adventure.

(IKI RETREAT by Onko Chishin also accepts reservations for tours of Tatsunoshima.)

Nishikihama

Nishikihama is popular as a sanctuary for lovers due to the "tragic love story of Komatsu and Sasaku" that is passed down locally. It is also affectionately known as "Love Girl Beach." Pink benigani and sakura shells are known as the shells of happiness, and Nishikihama is famous as the place where you can find these shells the most in Iki.

Iki Kagura

Iki Island has been spoken of since ancient times as a place with deep ties to the gods, and there are more than 150 shrines registered with the Shinto Shrine Agency alone. Boasting a long tradition and history dating back approximately 700 years, Iki Kagura is a sacred religious art form that has been designated a nationally important intangible cultural asset and is only permitted to be performed or danced by priests who serve at Iki shrines. From autumn to winter, Kagura is dedicated almost daily at each shrine on the island. On December 20th, a grand kagura performance is held at Sumiyoshi Shrine for approximately six hours, and at night the grounds are lit up in green, creating a mystical atmosphere.

ISLAND BREWERY (Craft beer)

ISLAND BREWERY was founded in April 2021 as the only craft beer maker in Nagasaki Prefecture. Wanting to make a beer that goes well with fish, they came up with the idea of making craft beer using white koji, which is used in barley shochu, which originated on Iki Island. They renovated a sake brewery with over 130 years of history to launch a craft beer brewery, and their logo motif is the discharge lamp of a fishing boat. In pursuit of a flavor that goes well with fresh seafood and Iki beef, which is said to be a legendary Japanese beef, they incorporate local specialties and ingredients used in barley shochu. The taste has a refreshing citrus-like acidity brought about by the citric acid derived from the white koji, and the aroma is a fruity hop aroma, making it light to drink.

Iki Olive Garden

Iki Olive Garden began about 11 years ago when 500 olive seedlings were planted as a new industry for the island. Iki is at the same latitude as the Mediterranean Sea, and the island's unique environment surrounded by the sea allows the olives and leaves to grow healthy and thick, and are rich in polyphenols, dietary fiber, calcium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E, and more. We have a wide range of products, including olive oil, olive fruit, and foods made with olive leaves, known as a superfood, health foods, and cosmetics. Our hotel uses and stocks several products, including amenities and oils for use in the spa.

Enjoy the rare luxury fish "Nodoguro"

IKI RETREAT by Onko Chishin recommends the "All-you-can-eat Nodoguro Kaiseki Plan" this fall.

Nodoguro, caught in the fertile waters of the Genkai Sea, is particularly fatty and has a melt-in-your-mouth texture and delicious flavor. Each dish is a luxurious combination of the bounty of Iki, and the most popular dish is seared nodoguro sushi, which allows you to enjoy its savory aroma and juicy meat.
