Marking its first weekend celebration since 2014, this UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage festival invites residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
An Enchanting Celebration of Heritage, the Furukawa Matsuri is not just a festival—it's an experience that encapsulates the spirit of Hida. Known for its harmonious blend of tranquility and excitement, the event features solemn shrine rituals held at the Keta Wakamiya Shrine, alongside captivating parades of elaborately adorned floats (yatai) and the dynamic Okoshi Daiko drumming performance. This festival signifies the arrival of spring and stands as a testament to the deep-rooted cultural heritage cherished by the community.
On the evening of April 19, the festivities will kick off at approximately 20:30 with the spirited performance of the Okoshi Daiko. Attendees will be treated to an electrifying display of drumming, set against the backdrop of spirited singing, as participants carry lanterns in a lively procession through the city, continuing until just after midnight.
Mikoshi and Yatai Parades:
The celebrations on April 19 will feature solemn shrine ceremonies and festive mikoshi parades, followed by a striking showcase of nine colorful yatai, each representing a different neighborhood. This parade creates a dazzling spectacle, bringing the community together in celebration.
The festivities will culminate on the evening of April 20th with the Night Festival, where the yatai, beautifully illuminated by lanterns, will parade through the streets. This magical atmosphere offers a unique experience, as the floats glow in the fading light, inviting attendees to witness the festival's quieter and more reflective side.
In addition to the main events, expect to see traditional lion dances, intricate mechanical puppet shows, and performances of children’s kabuki, each showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of Hida.
