Tokotan is based on the "beckoning cat" motif, a local specialty of which Tokoname City is the largest producer in Japan. In April 2014, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Tokoname City's incorporation, Tokotan was made the mascot character of the "Tokoname Boat Race" and became the official character of the city.
