It is said that in 1884, the Meiji era Confucian scholar Mori Kuso named it "Kinrin Lake" (Golden Scale Lake) after seeing the fish scales in the lake shining golden in the light of the setting sun. True to its name, the water's surface changes appearance depending on the time of day, and continues to fascinate visitors to this day.

The greatest feature of Lake Kinrin is that both pure water and hot springs bubble up from the bottom of the lake. Because the water temperature remains high throughout the year, in the early morning hours from late autumn to winter when the outside temperature drops, the temperature difference causes steam to rise from the lake's surface, creating a "morning mist."
