Bizen City Museum

Opened in July 2025, the Bizen City Museum of Art is a new tourist spot that showcases the charm of Bizen ware, which boasts a history of over a thousand years, and contemporary ceramics. Visitors can admire works ranging from those of Living National Treasures to promising pieces by young artists, and the museum also features a cafe and shop. It serves as a base for exploring the streets of Imbe and is a place where you can experience the art of earth and fire.

Bizen ware (Ibe town)

Walking through the town, you'll see climbing kilns with chimneys and workshops standing quietly, with finished pottery and jars lined up in front of the eaves. Just like the texture of Bizen ware, which is not adorned with ornate decorations, the entire town gives off a simple and calm impression. It's not flashy, but the accumulation of time spent working with clay and fire is directly reflected in the landscape.

At each pottery studio, wood-fired firing is still practiced, and during firing season, the smell of smoke sometimes permeates the town. The artisans' work, as they observe the changes occurring inside the kiln to complete their pieces, is not something prepared for tourism, but rather a part of their daily lives. Therefore, visitors can experience the real process of creation, rather than a finished exhibit.

Furthermore, because each pottery studio has its own unique style and philosophy, even Bizen ware can have vastly different impressions. Some studios produce pottery with a powerful, high-fired finish, while others pursue delicate forms, and each studio's individuality is scattered throughout the town. This diversity is the charm of Bizen City, and you can encounter different expressions as you walk around.
