Until December 24! teamLab’s Nighttime Art at Hama-rikyu Gardens

Hama-rikyu Gardens in central Tokyo will host teamLab: Hama-rikyu Gardens from November 25 to December 24, 2026.

Glowing sculptures and illuminated trees will respond to visitors, wildlife, and changing weather, transforming the historic garden into an interactive nighttime art space.

Tickets are now on sale, with advance timed reservations required.

Experience Art in a Historic Japanese Garden

With approximately 400 years of history, Hama-rikyu evolved from a Tokugawa falconry ground into a shogunal retreat and imperial detached palace before opening to the public in 1946.

Now designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Special Historic Site, the garden becomes the setting for an exhibition connecting nature, history, and contemporary art as part of ARTE TOKYO.

Glowing Ovoids That Respond to Visitors

In Autonomous Resonating Life, egg-shaped sculptures known as ovoids brighten and emit a tone when pushed by people or wildlife, or knocked over by strong wind or rain.

As each sculpture rises upright again, nearby ovoids respond in succession, sending light and sound through the installation and into the surrounding trees.

Another work, Resonating Microcosms – Solidified Light, also features ovoids that respond to visitors with light and sound.

Inside these sculptures, colorful patterns appear to change as viewers move, the sculptures sway, and the surrounding environment shifts. Each visitor’s perspective becomes part of the experience.

Waves of Light and Sound Through the Trees

The garden’s trees join the exhibition through Resonating Trees, an artwork that responds to the presence of people and wildlife.

As someone approaches, a tree shines more brightly and emits a tone. Neighboring trees respond one after another, carrying light and sound through the woodland.

The trees also connect with Autonomous Resonating Life, allowing responses to travel between the installations.

A wave of light arriving from deeper within the garden may signal another visitor, or a wild animal, moving beyond your view.

Changing Pillars and Spheres Made of Light

Pillars of Constant Flux changes its height and movement in response to wind, rain, humidity, and other environmental conditions.

The work continually changes form while maintaining its presence, exploring a balance between movement, continuity, and fragility.

Meanwhile, Spherical Crystallized Light presents what appears to be a sphere of light suspended inside a transparent sphere.

The inner sphere has no material surface. teamLab describes it as a Cognitive Sculpture, whose form exists through the viewer’s perception.

Together, these artworks offer different ways to experience the relationship between light, nature, movement, and the act of looking.
