Showa Kinen Park will stage its annual autumn foliage festival and evening illumination event, Yellow and Red Leaves Festival and Autumn Night Walk 2025, from October 30 to November 30.
Here are the top 3 recommended spots for viewing autumn leaves in Showa Kinen National Park (Showa Memorial Park).
1. Katarai Ginkgo Tree Avenue

The monthlong program invites visitors to immerse themselves in the park’s seasonal transformations, offering distinct experiences by day and by night. By daylight, stroll beneath the 300‑meter Katarai avenue and walk through a sweeping tunnel of golden ginkgo leaves.
Since many tourists visit on weekends, it is recommended to come on weekdays or early in the morning to avoid crowds.
2. Scenic Area along the Canal

The area along the canal in the park features beautifully harmonious tree-lined paths symmetrically planted with water views. No wonder it's a photogenic spot as the autumn leaves reflect on the water's surface.
During the evening hours, the vibrant autumn colors are illuminated by the sunset, making them stand out even more.
Additionally, benches along the canal make it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the autumn foliage.
3. The Traditional Japanese Garden

Wander the Japanese Garden’s pond‑winding paths to enjoy carefully composed scenes of maples, pines and traditional landscaping. After dusk, curated lighting enhances textures and colors, turning familiar vistas into atmospheric, otherworldly displays.
Since the garden is spacious and not crowded, it is a recommended spot for those who want to calmly enjoy the fall foliage.

Other notable areas, including the Waterfowl Pond, Flower & Tree Garden and Children’s Forest, showcase ginkgo, maple, metasequoia, plane tree and zelkova.

Foliage viewing continues after the event; Komorebi Hill often peaks in mid‑December and is recommended as a late‑season hidden gem.

Autumn Foliage Light-Up at Showa Kinen National Park

During the Autumn Leaves Festival, an exclusive nighttime light-up event called Autumn Night Stroll will also be held in the park, allowing you to enjoy fantastical scenery different from the daytime view.
Nighttime lighting will run daily from 16:30 to 20:30 and is expected to offer markedly different impressions from daytime viewing.

The Autumn Night Walk, now in its sixth year, drew roughly 200,000 visitors last year; this year the Canal has been added to the usual evening venues at Katarai Ginkgo Row and the Japanese Garden.

Lighting effects are designed to render even partially colored trees into a vivid golden scene at the Canal and Katarai, while illuminated maples and pines in the Japanese Garden create reflections on the water.

The park will again light the Bonsai Garden inside the Japanese Garden following positive reception last year.
