Matsumoto Castle: Gorgeous Light and Sound Displays in Winter 2021-2022

This winter, Matsumoto Castle holds a special sound and light illumination event! Matsumoto City Illuminations 2021-2022 will run from December 1, 2021, until February 28, 2022. The world heritage site Matsumoto Castle will be the centerpiece of laser mapping illumination display along with other light-ups.

Famous for having one of the few surviving original castle towers in the country, Matsumoto Castle is immensely popular among visitors who enjoy samurai-era Japan. Along with Himeji Castle and Kumamoto Castle, it is one of the most beautiful Japanese castles.

Visitors can marvel at the waters of the castle moat lit up in multicolored hues. Also, thanks to minimal light pollution, the attraction boasts an unobstructed view of the night sky above.

The city is promising a "glittering water mirror" scenery that is set to be an amazing nighttime photo spot for visitors as the light displays combine with a wintry wonderland.

Even the castle park will feature a series of meandering lanterns that lead the way to the keep. Visitors will be able to stroll through a number of other intimate illumination spots around Matsumoto.

Take a winter walk along Chitose Bridge and admire the retro stylings of Matsumoto's gas street lights and warming atmosphere.

Or you can enjoy the tree-lined promenade of Daimyomachi lit up by rows of cozy tea lights.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, the city has also erected a 6 meter tall Christmas tree which will be on display outside of Matsumoto PARCO's north entrance.

Nagano is a perennial favorite winter destination and a stop into Matsumoto is always a must. So be sure to check out the illumination and marvel at the sights.
