Kawana Hotel: A Resort with Splendid Ocean Views

The Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka has long been famous as a resort area known for its warm climate and abundant hot springs.

Kawana Hotel, a resort hotel founded in 1936, is located on the eastern side of the peninsula about 30 kilometers south of Atami.

The main building and Inakaya, a Japanese restaurant, were built in the early Showa Era (1926-1989). Both feature beautiful, well-preserved architecture that is presently registered as important cultural properties.

From Tokyo, take the Manazuru Road to National Highway 135. The hotel is located near the highway. It takes about an hour and forty minutes (two hours maximum) from the Atsugi Interchange.

From the Kansai area, it takes about an hour and a half from the Numazu Interchange.

There is also a complimentary bus service from Ito Station. Be sure to check the timetable since there are only three to four rides per day.

A Refined Setting Within a Historical Hotel

The entrance of the main building leads visitors into a spacious lobby with a vaulted ceiling and large windows offering stunning ocean views.

The stately interior of the early Showa Period is the perfect contrast to the bright, soft sunshine of the Izu Peninsula. Guests will be enchanted by this exquisite design.

Sitting on the leather couch and looking out at the ocean, you might feel as if you're basking in refined culture.

Wouldn't it be nice if this was an everyday occurrence?

Afternoon Tea at the Sun Parlor Lounge

Sublime Afternoon Tea at Kawana Hotel in the Izu Peninsula

While the lobby is absolutely enchanting, let's take a break at the Sun Parlor Lounge.

Beverages, confections, and afternoon tea are served in this facility, where the word "taste" may be more fitting than "enjoy."

The lounge is open to visitors who are not staying at the hotel.

Our writer had a hard time choosing which cake to order but ultimately selected the strawberry cheesecake set (1,850 yen after tax*).

Alongside the elegant cake, coffee is served in a shining silver pot. This is truly a delight! The extraordinary experience made us wonder again what it would be like to have this every day.

Other eye-catching menu items were the omelet rice (2,700 yen after tax*) featuring the hotel's logo and the afternoon tea set (4,400 yen after tax*) consisting of sandwiches, confections, and beverages.

It would be nice to visit the parlor on a birthday or an anniversary, and forget about the day-to-day troubles. The omelet rice is an time-limited menu, and can be ordered only between 11:00 and 15:00, so be careful.

*Please note that a service charge will be added to the prices mentioned above.

Open-air Facilities

A walk through the well-maintained garden, with a view of the ocean, should not be missed at this hotel.

The sparkling outdoor pool is open only in summer, and there is no charge for the guests. Various flowers such as cherry blossoms, azaleas, and hydrangeas grace the garden precincts as the seasons change.

Although we hoped to savor the charms a little longer, the time to leave came abruptly after tea.

Kawana Hotel is currently a member of Prince Hotels & Resorts, which makes it easier for the general public to use. Do visit this hotel, and enjoy a special holiday.
