Complete the application at your carrier or sales agent.

Receive a QR code to add the eSIM.

Scan the QR code with your smartphone.

Select a mobile data plan from the settings.

Make sure your phone is an eSIM compatible model.

Not many devices are compatible with eSIM, so make sure that your smartphone is an eSIM compatible model before applying.

You can only use the eSIM with the device that scanned the QR code.

Once the QR code is scanned, it can only be used with that device. If you wish to use your existing eSIM on a new device, you must complete a separate online procedure to do so. (A fee may be charged for reissuing a profile.)

Note that there may be an eSIM reissue fee when changing devices, so if you change devices frequently, pay attention to this fee.

Only a few carriers offer eSIM-enabled plans.

Not many carriers currently offer eSIM in Japan, so when buying an eSIM in Japan, check where it is available.
