What is the Ebisu Summer Festival?

The Ebisu Summer Festival is named after Ebisu Shrine, affectionately known as Ebessan, located in the center of Taragi Town, Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture. A fireworks display and Bon Odori dance will be held. Please enjoy the Bon Odori dance and fireworks in the pristine scenery and rich nature unique to Oku-Kuma.

The fireworks display has been held every year since before 1955 along the banks of the Kuma River during the Obon period as a summer festival, and has become a popular summer feature in Taragi Town.

A fireworks display and Bon Odori dance will be held, along with store exhibits and 2,000 fireworks. The summer scenery you can experience in the midst of Okutama's unique landscapes and rich nature will surely become a special memory and will light up your summer night sky this year.

The 2024 Ebisu Summer Festival is scheduled to be held on Saturday, August 17th from 7:00pm to 9:30pm (doors open at 6:00pm, opening ceremony scheduled for 7:00pm). For more information, please contact the Taragi Town Chamber of Commerce. Events include stalls, Bon Odori dancing, a fun raffle, and a fireworks display.

How to enjoy the Ebisu Summer Festival

Highlight #1: 2,000 fireworks

The highlight of this festival is the spectacular fireworks! A total of 2,000 fireworks and a 100m wide Niagara are prepared, and as the representative fireworks display of Oku-Kuma, it attracts more than 10,000 people and is crowded with many people every year.

Highlight No. 2: Bon Odori dance performed by locals

At the Ebisu Summer Festival, local residents participate and perform a grand Bon Odori dance. Bon Odori is an event in which the spirits of ancestors who are welcomed during the Obon period are welcomed with dance and then sent off by spending time together. It is a sacred event, but it also plays a role in local exchange and is open to anyone. Since each region has its own history of development, there are many different dance styles and music. You can witness the local culture that can only be experienced in that region. Be sure to experience the Bon Odori dance unique to Oku-Kuma.

Delicious food from Taragi Town

The Kuma area is rich in water, has an abundance of delicious vegetables and fruits, and has many local dishes that have developed from its own unique culture. You can get a pamphlet at the Taragi Town Tourism Association in the former Shirahama Ryokan. They also have original Taragi Town masking tape, and you may be able to find cute souvenirs that can only be bought here, as well as valuable local information.

Taragi Gourmet Stamp Rally (August 1st to October 31st, 2024)

In addition, a fun event called the Taragigurume Stamp Rally is held during this period.

If you spend 500 yen or more on food and drink at participating restaurants, you will receive one stamp. Visit various restaurants to collect stamps with different store numbers, and if you collect three or more stamps, you can enter for various prizes.
