The nearest train station for the Atami Fireworks is JR Atami Station. You can get there by Shinkansen or JR Tokaido Line trains from Tokyo.

The fireworks are launched over Atami Bay. It takes about a 15-minute walk from JR Atami Station to the viewing spot on Atami Sunshine Beach, and about 20 minutes to Kinju Water Park.

The Atami Fireworks Festival does not have a dedicated parking lot, so it is recommended to use nearby paid parking facilities or public transportation.

After the fireworks display ends, there are four Shinkansen trains heading back to Tokyo at approximately 21:02, 21:26, 22:02, and 22:41. The trip takes about 45 minutes and costs 4,270 yen.

The Origins of Atami's Maritime Fireworks Festival

The origin of the Atami fireworks is linked to a series of disasters, starting with a typhoon in 1949. At that time, Atami was hit by enormous waves caused by Typhoon Kittie, which destroyed over 140 households along the coast.

The following year, Atami experienced the Atami Station Fire and a major fire in the city center ten days later, resulting in 979 houses being burned down.

To promote post-disaster reconstruction, the Atami Maritime Fireworks Festival began in 1952. In summer 2025, it will celebrate its 74th year, and this event has become one of the highlights of Atami.

During the show, about 5,000 fireworks light up the night sky over Atami Bay. The sound resonates due to the launches within the bay, creating a powerful acoustic effect.

The highlight is the grand finale, Great Sky Niagara, where the reflections of the fireworks on the ocean surface create a fantastical landscape.

3 Highlights of the Atami Fireworks

The biggest highlight of the Atami Maritime Fireworks Festival is that the fireworks are launched from platforms on the ocean. As a result, the reflected light on the water creates a dreamlike spectacle.

1. Bowl-Shaped Terrain Offering Great Views

Atami Bay is surrounded by mountains, forming a basin-like terrain, which causes the echoes when fireworks explode, making it feel as if the sound is emanating from all directions around you. The sound and light effects are therefore excellent.

Compared to typical fireworks festivals, the echoes and sense of immediacy are more pronounced, creating a very impressive and stunning experience.

2. Great Sky Niagara

At the finale of the fireworks festival, the Great Sky Niagara display is launched.

The Great Sky Niagara consists of fireworks that are not order-made but are launched from the entire venue, called star mines. Thousands of fireworks are consecutively launched, creating a grand scene as if a massive waterfall is flowing across the sky.

This moment especially captivates all the spectators in the venue, enveloping them in loud cheers.

3. Stalls and Beer Gardens at the Waterfront Park

When it comes to fireworks festivals, not only is the enjoyment of watching the display important, but the event stalls are also a major attraction.

One highlight is the Beer Garden held at the Waterfront Park Event Square (Zone 2).

Around Sun Beach and the Waterfront Park, there are various food stalls offering takoyaki, yakisoba, ice cream, and more, allowing visitors to enjoy snacks while watching the fireworks.

Nagisa Deck: A Special Viewing Spot Recommended by Our Editor

Google Maps

Having visited Atami several times myself, I highly recommend watching the fireworks from near the Nagisa Deck.

Since it is a bit away from Sunshine Beach, the crowd is smaller. The angle of the fireworks display is almost directly in front, making it my personal favorite free premium seat.
