What is Taiko?
Originating in Japan centuries ago, wadaiko has evolved from its warring, ritualistic and spiritual roots into a dynamic performance art. Drums range in size from small hand-held to large barrel-sized instruments, producing a rich, deep sound that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
The giant taiko drum in particular is characterized by its ability to produce a wide range of sounds from low to high, and by using different playing techniques, a single giant drum can produce a variety of tones like those of a grand piano.
Why take a Taiko class?
Cultural Immersion
Learning to play Japanese drums is a cultural experience that allows you to experience Japanese history and customs through the rhythm and technique of the o-daiko drum, which is a particularly rare type of Japanese drum.
Full body exercise
Taiko drumming is an incredibly fascinating combination of rhythmic patterns and physical movements that require focus and coordination -- an experience that will not only strengthen your muscles, but also invigorate your soul .
Stress relief and mindfulness
The repetitive thumping and vibrations of the drums create a more meditative atmosphere than you might expect. Many who experience taiko drumming find it helps them to release stress, relax their minds, and feel deeply present.
What to expect in class
