A two- Tomari, one-night trip to Wakayama, Kushimoto , where you can experience tuna farming, enjoy dried fish cuisine, and enjoy a hot spring with a spectacular view. We introduce a trip filled with learning and relaxation for the whole family to enjoy the sea.
Kushimoto Town Wakayama Prefecture , Wakayama Prefecture, is a town surrounded by sea and mountains at the southernmost tip of Honshu. It is also known for the national natural monument "Hashiguiiwa" and the port town that successfully cultivated Japan's first fully-fledged tuna.
This time, I went on a two- Tomari, one-night family trip with my elementary school daughter to "learn about the bounty of the sea with all five senses." From tuna farming experiences and dried fish set meals to hot springs and spectacular hotel views, I'd like to introduce you to a trip where you can feel the warmth of nature and people.
The symbol of Kushimoto, Hashikuiiwa, is a group of unusually shaped rocks that are rare in Japan, with over 40 large and small rocks lined up in a straight line from the sea. They can be viewed from the hotel windows and open-air baths, and show completely different faces in the morning, afternoon and evening.
For lunch, we went to a local dried fish specialty store called "Ozaki no Himono." They process fish caught in the sea right in front of the restaurant and serve it as a set meal.
The recommended dishes are the "Mackerel Mirin Set Meal" and the "Hiraki Set Meal." My daughter loves the "Tuna Bowl," and she even exclaimed, "Dried fish can be so delicious!?" If you like the dried fish, you can buy it on the spot and have it delivered.

After your meal, head to the hot springs near the hotel. Here, you can relax in an open-air bath overlooking Hashikuiiwa Rocks. If you visit at dusk, you can enjoy a relaxing time with the fantastic seascape as your backdrop.
The next morning, we headed to the "Bluefin Tuna Farming Experience" organized by the Nanki Kushimoto Tourism Association. We gathered at the fishing port accompanied by an instructor, and after a lecture, we boarded a fishing boat and set off to sea.
More than 200 tuna swim around in the 40m diameter tank. During the experience, you can throw 100kg of sardines into the tank and experience the powerful feeding action. My daughter was nervous at first, but she was excited to see the tuna jumping around!

After the experience, we sampled some tuna at the nearby seaside restaurant "Suimon Matsuri." The sashimi was fatty and tender, and my daughter was impressed, saying, "This is the best tuna I've ever eaten."
The tuna you taste after learning about the efforts and passion of the fishermen that go into farming it becomes a special dish. It's also a recommended experience for food education.
We stayed at a hotel right next to Hashikuiiwa Rock. From the large windows we could see the ocean, watch the Asahi rise over the horizon in the morning, and be surrounded by the sound of the waves at night, relaxing both body and mind.
There are Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) and hot springs within walking distance, making it a perfect base for your trip.
