A two- Tomari, one-night trip around Minamiyamashiro Village in Kyoto and Tsukigase in Nara . Enjoy beautiful tea fields and matcha sweets, and experience safflower dyeing with Japan's only plum artisan. We introduce a trip that will soothe you with nature and traditional culture.
I wanted to get away from my busy daily life and experience traditional Japanese culture. With that thought in mind, I visited Minamiyamashiro Village Village, the only village in Kyoto Prefecture , and Tsukigase in neighboring Nara Prefecture. Here, I encountered beautiful tea fields, warm people, and the one-of-a-kind safflower dyeing experience.
Have you ever heard of "Ubai"? It is made by smoking plums black and then drying them. It was once used as a medicine and as a mordant (an assistant agent to fix the color) for safflower dyeing.
At the dyeing studio "Umekoan" in Tsukigase, Nara , you can experience traditional safflower dyeing under Mr. Nakanishi, the only craftsman in Japan who has been making Ume for generations.
The items that are dyed include T-shirts, scarves, eco-bags, etc. Using only natural materials, the red pigment of safflower, which is only 1% of the total, is extracted over 90 minutes. By adding lye and black plum juice, the dye is dyed a natural red color.
🧵 "I want people to not just see and hear, but actually experience it. It takes time, but that's the beauty of handmade work," says Nakanishi.
In between dyeing, you can enjoy lunch made with local vegetables and experience picking butterbur. Time passes in a tranquil and luxurious way, as if you were living in a rural area.

On the first day of the trip, we went to "dan dan café" in ** Wazuka Town -cho**, next to Minamiyamashiro Village . Spreading out before our eyes was the beautiful terraced tea fields of "Ishidera Tea Fields." The matcha parfaits and gelatos, available only from spring to summer, are rich in flavor and made with spring-picked tea from local tea farmers.
The conversation with the shop staff was also heartwarming. I was impressed when they told me, "The taste this year may be a little different from next year's."
