What is Mount Fuji, the symbol of Japan?

When you hear Mount Fuji, the first thing that comes to mind is its beautiful conical silhouette. Not only is it the highest mountain in Japan, but its perfect shape has been deeply engraved in the hearts of Japanese people since ancient times. It also shows off its unique expressions in each season, from cherry blossoms in spring, to autumn leaves, to a blanket of snow in winter.

Mount Fuji has also been revered as an object of faith since ancient times. Shrines are dotted around the summit, and the mountain's cultural value as a sacred mountain is highly regarded. Due to its cultural and historical value, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013 as an "object of faith and a source of artistic inspiration," and is internationally recognized.

Furthermore, it has long been loved as a subject for art, such as ukiyo-e and poetry. For these reasons, Mount Fuji is not just a mountain, but is known throughout the world as a symbol of Japan.

Climbing Mt. Fuji is something you should try at least once in your life

In Japan, there is a famous saying, " A fool who never climbs Mount Fuji, a fool who climbs it twice ." This means that everyone should climb it at least once in their lifetime, but climbing it twice is too difficult and excessive, expressing the difficulty and unique value of climbing the mountain. That is how special Mount Fuji is!

After the war, with the development of transportation networks and mountain huts, climbing Mount Fuji became popular among the general public.
Nowadays, mountain climbing has become popular as a way to achieve self-realization, improve one's health, and even as a tourist activity. Summer (July to September) is the climbing season, and the experience of seeing the sunrise from the summit is said to be an unforgettable experience in one's life , and many people consider climbing Mount Fuji to be a major event in their lives.

The best season for climbing Mount Fuji is said to be from July to September every year.
The weather is stable during this period, making it a safe time for many climbers to attempt the climb. Particularly popular is night climbing to see the sunrise on Mount Fuji, and the mystical experience of watching the sunrise at the summit is one of the mountain's greatest attractions, and for many climbers it is a special moment they want to experience at least once in their lives.

Mount Fuji is a high mountain with an altitude of 3,776 meters, and is by no means an easy mountain to climb.
Of course, people who are confident in their physical strength can take on the challenge, but even beginners can take on the challenge if they are properly prepared. Preparation for climbing Mt. Fuji: Must-have items and clothing tips

Mount Fuji is a high mountain with an elevation of 3,776 meters, and is characterized by its changeable weather and large temperature differences. For a comfortable and safe climb, be sure to bring the following items and clothing.

Hiking shoes : We recommend trekking shoes that provide good support up to the ankles. It is best to wear shoes that are non-slip and waterproof.

Cold weather gear : Temperatures on Mount Fuji can drop below freezing at night and at the summit. Bring warm clothes that you can layer, such as fleece or a down jacket, and a windbreaker to protect you from the wind.

Headlamp : An essential item for night climbing. Don't forget to bring extra batteries.

Gloves and hat : These are essential for protection against the cold, especially on the summit where the wind can be strong, as they will help prevent hypothermia.

Rain gear : Prepare for sudden changes in weather by bringing highly waterproof and breathable rain gear.

Trekking poles : These reduce the strain on your knees and help stabilize your walking. They are especially recommended for descending.

Map and smartphone: These are essential for checking the hiking trails and for making emergency contact. Be sure to check the route in advance.

Drinking water and snacks : It's easy to get dehydrated at high altitudes, so drink plenty of water. Don't forget to bring snacks to replenish your energy. High-sugar candy or chocolate are recommended.

Cash : Many mountain huts and shops may not take credit cards, so bring enough cash for lodging, meals, and emergency purchases.

Garbage bags : There is a rule that you must take home any garbage you produce while hiking or at mountain huts. To protect the environment, please bring a garbage bag.

Fujinomiya Route :
Characteristics: This route has a high altitude and is relatively short to the summit.
Advantages: The distance is short, so even those who are not confident in their physical strength can easily take on the challenge. It is suitable for those who want to shorten the climbing time.
Disadvantages: There are many steep slopes and rocky areas, making the climb challenging and it may be a bit hard for beginners.

Yoshidaguchi Route:
Characteristics: This is the most popular route on Mt. Fuji, with plenty of hiking trails and mountain huts.
Pros: The trail is well-maintained and easy to walk, with plenty of rest areas along the way, so it's safe for beginners. You can also enjoy the scenery.
Disadvantages: The distance is quite long, so it may be a bit difficult if you are not confident in your physical strength.

Conclusion:
For beginners, the Yoshidaguchi Route is more recommended .
There are well-maintained trails, well-equipped mountain huts, and plenty of rest points, so you can enjoy hiking without any stress.

Mount Fuji climbing regulations for 2025

Yoshidaguchi Route (Yamanashi Prefecture side)

Between July 1 and September 10, 2025, climbing restrictions will be implemented on the Yoshida Trail on the Yamanashi Prefecture side.
This is a measure to prevent rushed climbing (unreasonable climbing from late at night to early morning) and overcrowding.

[ Advance reservations and toll fees ] Advance reservations are required to enter the mountain. A toll fee of 4,000 yen must be paid at the time of reservation.

Fujinomiya Entrance, Gotemba Entrance, Subashiri Entrance (Route on the Shizuoka Prefecture side)

Similar restrictions will be implemented on hiking trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side from 2025.

[ Completion of advance e-learning ] Climbers must take an e-learning course (online course) in advance to learn the rules and etiquette for climbing Mount Fuji, and obtain a certificate of completion.
