What is waterfall training?
It is a syncretic Shinto-Buddhist training method in which people are splashed under a waterfall to purify their body and mind, and is an event associated with esoteric Buddhism, Shugendo, and Shinto. The purpose of this ritual is to purify and train the mind, as well as refresh the body and mind, and being splashed under the cold water helps to develop mental strength.

The waterfall on the right is called "Otoko-taki" (male waterfall) and the waterfall on the left is called "Metaki" (female waterfall). Together with the waterfalls downstream, "Hakuryu" and "Garyu", they are collectively known as "Kanabiki-no-taki".
