We introduce restaurants in the Chutan region (Maizuru City, Ayabe City, Fukuchiyama City), surrounded by bountiful seas, rivers, and satoyama (satoyama) mountains. We introduce the charms of Kyoto Maizuru ARIYOSHI, a counter-style kappo restaurant located in the port city of Maizuru, and Torinago, a long-established restaurant in Fukuchiyama City known for its specialty duck sukiyaki.
Kyoto Maizuru ARIYOSHI (Momoyama-cho, Maizuru City), located on the second floor of a commercial building in Higashi-Maizuru, attracts customers from the local area of Maizuru, neighboring cities and towns, and even from further afield who have heard of its reputation.
With a total of 15 seats, including 9 at the counter and 6 in private rooms, customers can enjoy the wide variety of Japanese cuisine prepared by Noriaki Ariyoshi, who has been cooking Japanese cuisine for 40 years. Many customers enjoy Ariyoshi's cooking, and many use the restaurant for special occasions such as wedding anniversaries and birthdays.
It is also a proud store that is used by many local businesses for business purposes.
Reservations are required and meals start at the same time at the desired time. The diverse Japanese cuisine is made using seasonal ingredients carefully selected from all over the country. Counter-style kappo restaurants with simultaneous dining are now mainstream, but when the restaurant first opened 10 years ago, there were only a few in Gion, Kyoto. Of course, there were none in Maizuru.
With the aim of providing the best food and hospitality, we have adopted a set chef's choice course with the same price and a style where everyone starts at the same time.
The food is prepared in a way that allows customers to see it being prepared, and each dish is carefully explained and served so that customers can enjoy it visually. This service has been well-received, and the restaurant has become a "special restaurant" that customers visit for anniversaries and other special occasions. In addition to being frequented by food connoisseurs, the restaurant's reputation has led to customers visiting for business entertainment bringing in customers from all over the country.
There are five course options available (ranging from 11,000 yen to over 22,000 yen). Specialties include the limited-time Koppe Crab (female Matsuba crab) topped with Tosa vinegar jelly, steamed sushi with piping hot rice topped with pickled seafood, and earthenware pot rice made with seasonal ingredients. Another popular dish is the prosciutto, sliced ultra-thinly using a slicer made by the Italian company Berkel.
"Customers who come to this restaurant have their own reasons for coming, such as simply enjoying a meal or celebrating an anniversary," says Ariyoshi. Regarding the future of the restaurant, he adds, "It goes without saying that the food is delicious. We will continue to work hard to create a space where each customer can enjoy themselves, and make it a place that Maizuru will continue to be glad to have."
At ARIYOSHI, the food always exceeds your expectations. Enjoy the food by looking at it and tasting it.
Torinako (Nakano, Fukuchiyama City), located near Goryo Shrine, which enshrines the Sengoku period warlord Akechi Mitsuhide, was founded as an izakaya serving chicken dishes in 1976. It moved to its current location 45 years ago and has been serving its specialty chicken dishes for about half a century.
"Kamosuki," a hot pot dish that has become a Torinako specialty, has been on the menu since then. Restaurants that specialize in chicken dishes were rare at the time, but Kamosuki was a particularly popular dish. Before long, Torinako became synonymous with "kamosuki."
The simple duck sukiyaki hotpot, which combines duck meat and duck dumplings with plenty of spring onions, has become popular not only among locals but also among customers from outside the city. In addition to duck sukiyaki, the main store also serves grilled chicken sashimi, yakitori, fried chicken, and other dishes made with fresh chicken from the Tamba and Tajima regions. You can enjoy carefully selected chicken dishes in a homey atmosphere.
In 2015, the cafe bar and restaurant "Yanagimachi" opened in Shimoyanagimachi, Fukuchiyama City. In 2020, they began operating "Torinago Kyubei," a restaurant renovated from the former Kataoka family home across from Yanagimachi.
The area around Shimoyanagicho, where both stores are located, was once a prosperous post town on the Kyo-kaido (San'in Kaido) road that ran along the Yura River. The cafe, bar and restaurant Yanagicho is a renovated townhouse from the Meiji period that stood in an area that still retains the atmosphere of a castle town.
Yanagimachi is a restaurant that combines the history of a building with over 100 years of history with a modern space that includes a cafe bar. They are particular about the ingredients, sake, and even the tableware, and use only the finest ingredients, meeting directly with the producers.
In addition to duck sukiyaki, the lunch-only oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl) made with local chicken is also a popular menu item. The chicken used is "Kyoto Jidori," a brand livestock product from Kyoto Prefecture. The rice is organically grown by farmers in the neighboring city of Ayabe. The restaurant is bustling with tourists during the day, and the cafe attached makes it a popular spot for couples to casually visit.
Meanwhile, Torinago Kyubei, which opened in 2020 across from Yanagimachi, is a quaint restaurant with 15 private rooms of various sizes, restored from the main house of Kataoka Kyubei, a kimono merchant who laid the foundation for commerce in Fukuchiyama.
The hotel has preserved and utilized three buildings of great cultural value, including the wooden main house and annex, built during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. Its greatest feature is the calming private space, and each room, such as the living room and large hall, has been converted into guest rooms while retaining as much of its original furnishings as possible.
While Kyubey follows the menu of the main store, they also create their own original dishes, focusing on duck dishes. The popular "Duck Loin Bowl" is only available at lunchtime, and duck gyoza, croquettes, and hamburgers are also unique dishes that can only be found at Kyubey.
As all the rooms are private, it is often used for business occasions such as entertaining guests, and there is a wide selection of high-quality sake, including Junmai Daiginjo. On the other hand, there are also spacious private tatami rooms so that parents with children can enjoy their meals without any worries.
Kyubey is a restaurant that has inherited the will of its founder, Naomi Adachi. It has the atmosphere of a high-class Japanese restaurant, but like the main store, it has a warm and welcoming space and is easy to enter, and the reasonable prices are also a plus. We hope you will enjoy trying the duck sukiyaki at each store, tailored to the occasion.
The Kyoto by the Sea area is about 99 km from Kyoto city, and can be reached in as little as 90 minutes by car or bus. It is close by and offers another side to Kyoto, with a different atmosphere from the city. Once upon a time, there was an ancient nation (Taniha no Kuni) with an advanced culture that was introduced from the continent, and it was also the secret stage of the creation of Japan. The Kyoto by the Sea area is filled with evidence of its origin, such as the legend of the descent of Toyouke-no-Okami, the oldest god of food, the demon legend of Mt. Oe, and the legend of the Dragon Palace. It is filled with the charms of Japan scattered throughout each era, such as Amanohashidate, which was the source of Kyoto culture that fascinates the world and was longed for by the people of the capital during the Heian and Muromachi periods, the Tango Chirimen Corridor woven with silk that has been spun for 300 years, the modern industrial heritage sites of Maizuru and Ayabe, the one-of-a-kind Ine Funaya landscape born from the work of fishermen, and Fukuchiyama Castle, which conveys the Warring States period to the present day. Furthermore, "Kyoto of the Sea" is a land of abundance, blessed with ingredients beloved by the god of food, such as seafood like Matsuba crab and Ine yellowtail, and rice and vegetables grown in pure water. Furthermore, its natural scenery, including the San'in Coast, a Global Geopark, and the mountains and rivers where gods, Buddhas and even demons reside, pique the curiosity of travelers, whose beauty will soothe their souls. It is a region where the culture of "valuing harmony" has lived on since ancient times, and where kind people are gracious and accommodating to travelers when they encounter it. Everything you taste and encounter here is connected to Japan's roots. This is Kyoto of the Sea, the source of Japan that lives in the heavens, earth, mountains and seas.
