What is the uniquely Japanese culture of "stamp rallies"?

Are you familiar with the Japanese culture of "stamp rallies"?

Its roots date back to the pilgrimage culture of shrines and temples that has continued for 1,300 years. In the past, people received a stamp and ink inscription in a booklet called a "Goshuincho" as proof of visiting a shrine or temple. This ancient pilgrimage culture has taken root in railway companies and tourist destinations, evolving into a uniquely Japanese system that "turns travel into entertainment," and blending it with a modern sense of playfulness to create stamp rallies. The joy of stamping and the sense of accomplishment of collecting stamps have made it a popular national event in Japan that can captivate people of all ages.

In recent years, this traditional culture has also been gaining attention among foreign visitors tourists visiting Japan as a way to create tangible memories of their trip. Travelers from all over the world are sharing their stamp collections on social media using the hashtag "#Stamprally," making it a new travel trend.

What's particularly noteworthy is that many of them are free to participate in. In addition, the stamps you collect can sometimes be exchanged for special gifts (rewards), making it a "treasure hunt challenge."

Regarding the stamp rally

"We want guests from all over the world to enjoy an experience that is unique to Japan."

"Now that digitalization is on the rise, we want people to take home tangible memories."

With this in mind, we will be holding the "Stay & Stamp Challenge!" stamp rally campaign exclusively for foreign visitors to Japan, starting March 16, 2026.

When you check in to participating hotels and inns, you will be given an original stamp booklet. If you collect stamps by visiting each facility, you will receive a luxurious reward on a first-come, first-served basis!

We operate hotels and inns throughout Japan, primarily in Kyushu and Okinawa, with 17 facilities ranging from urban hotels to hot spring resorts, each offering a unique lodging experience deeply rooted in the local community. Located about an hour and a half by plane southwest of the capital, Tokyo, Kyushu is rich in natural beauty and a unique craft culture. Discover a new side of Japan through the stamp rally!
