ZEN NIGHT TOKYO Comes to the Tokyo National Museum

The Tokyo National Museum in Ueno will open its garden after dark for ZEN NIGHT TOKYO, an immersive nighttime event running from October 14 to December 6, 2026.

Normally closed from 17:00, the historic garden will be transformed with illuminated autumn foliage, a large-scale sea of clouds, sound art, and atmospheric lighting.

Visitors can also experience Zen-inspired activities that combine traditional practices with modern technology, including walking meditation and special zazen sessions.

This marks the first ZEN NIGHT event in Tokyo, following previous editions at Kenninji Temple in Kyoto, Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, and Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto.

Autumn Illuminations and a Sea of Clouds

The museum garden will take on a completely different atmosphere after sunset, with colorful autumn leaves illuminated against the night sky.

At Suigetsu Pond, visitors can admire reflections of the autumn foliage and moon across the water, creating a tranquil setting inspired by Zen.

A large-scale artificial sea of clouds will add another dreamlike element to the nighttime garden.

Enjoy Matcha Surrounded by Autumn Leaves

A special outdoor Momiji Tea House will open beside the pond during the event.

Visitors can enjoy warm matcha or matcha lattes while taking in the illuminated autumn scenery, offering a relaxing break during an evening walk through the garden.

A Milky Way-Inspired Zen Garden

Another highlight is the Tenmoku Garden, which will appear in front of Kujo-kan, a historic teahouse relocated from the former residence of the Kujo family.

The dry landscape garden uses light and darkness to recreate the appearance of the Milky Way, seemingly emerging from the night.

Walk Among 3,000 Red Spider Lilies

One of the event's most atmospheric areas will feature around 3,000 red spider lilies along a pathway behind the pond.

Called Hyakki Yado, the mysterious nighttime path is designed to evoke the presence of mononoke, supernatural beings found throughout Japanese folklore.

The glowing red flowers and historic teahouses create an eerie contrast to the more peaceful areas of the garden.

Experience Zen With Modern Technology

ZEN NIGHT TOKYO also brings technology into traditional Zen practices.

Visitors can experience walking meditation while exploring the garden, accompanied by VIE's Neuro Music™, which uses sound as part of the immersive experience.

A separate EEG zazen experience will allow participants to practice seated Zen meditation while their brain waves are measured. Advance reservations are required.

Special Zazen Sessions With Daitokuji Monks

Special meditation sessions led by monks from Kyoto's Daitokuji Temple will also be held on selected dates.

On November 5, visitors can join a zazen session led by the head priest of Daisen-in, a Daitokuji subtemple famous for its dry landscape garden and connection to tea master Sen no Rikyu.

Another special program on November 13 will feature approximately one hour of zazen followed by shojin ryori, traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, at TOHAKU Chakan inside the museum garden.

See Rare Zen Treasures From Daitokuji Temple

ZEN NIGHT TOKYO will take place alongside a major exhibition celebrating the 700th anniversary of Daitokuji Temple.

Held at the Tokyo National Museum's Heiseikan, the exhibition brings important Zen treasures from Kyoto to Tokyo and marks the first major Daitokuji exhibition in 41 years.

Highlights include the National Treasure Kannon, Monkey, and Crane by Muqi and the celebrated National Treasure Yohen Tenmoku tea bowl, both scheduled to be displayed from October 14 to November 8.

The exhibition will also recreate the normally closed upper floor of Daitokuji's Sanmon Gate, featuring colorful ceiling and pillar paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku.

Admission to the Daitokuji exhibition is included with ZEN NIGHT TOKYO tickets.
