For this article, we interviewed the staff at this unique hostel that allows travelers to get a close-up look at everyday life in Kyoto.
A Hostel Popular Among International Guests!
PIECE HOSTEL SANJO's concept is to be an essential piece of every guest's trip.
The hostel hopes that its lodgers have an unforgettable trip through their interactions with other travelers and residents. So on the premises, they've set up a cafe & bar open to the general public and a common space.
The staff comes from various countries, such as Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, China, and France, and, of course, Japan. Each employee can speak both Japanese and English, so guests can enjoy a worry-free stay here. We've been told that the hostel's comfy ambiance and superb English service are two reasons why international visitors find it so appealing.
Now, let's take a closer look inside PIECE HOSTEL SANJO.
1st Floor: Check-In Counter
The exterior of PIECE HOSTEL SANJO features a stylish design of sleek, bare concrete. As soon as you enter the first floor, you're greeted by staff at the check-in counter.
The employees have also gained a good reputation for their warm and friendly service. If you have any questions or concerns during your stay, don't hesitate to ask one of them. They'll politely and promptly assist you.
Basement (1st Level): A Cafe and Bar Where People Gather
Something worth paying attention to is the cafe and bar space on the first level basement. You can spend some time relaxing while sipping a coffee or beer in this bright and airy space flooded with natural light. This area is also open to visitors not staying at the hostel.
The cafe and bar is particular about the coffee they serve and take pride in their selection.
A variety of coffee beans is brought in regularly from a local roaster in Kyoto. On the day of this interview, the counter was lined with three distinct bean assortments. If you ask the staff about the characteristics of each variety, they will politely explain in either Japanese or English.
When evening arrives, the establishment shifts its focus to alcoholic beverages. At the bar counter, hotel guests can be seen conversing among themselves with a drink in one hand.
The cafe and bar also has a relaxing lounge area. It's equipped with power sockets and Wi-Fi, so you can look up travel information on your smartphone or computer while enjoying a drink.
You may end up spending a substantial amount of time here because of how comfortable the spacious area is.
A Common Area Where Visitors and Locals Mingle
On the rooftop is a large common area. There are jazz events held several times a month that are open to the general public. Hostel guests and locals can mix and mingle here.
