The Sotome Area of Nagasaki, a Christian Heritage Site

sotome

The Sotome area, located in northwestern Nagasaki City, boasts breathtaking coastal views that stretch all the way to the Goto Islands on clear days.

Sotome is also famous for its history; during the ban on Christianity, Hidden Christians in the Ono and Shitsu villages secretly kept their faith alive here. Today, the area’s premier attraction is the World Heritage-listed Ono Church.

Cafe OZIMOC: The New Life of a Traditional House

Sotome Nagasaki

On your way to Ono Church, you will pass by Cafe OZIMOC, a charming café nestled inside a wildflower garden and housed in a traditional, 120-year-old home. Because they do not accept reservations, seating is first-come, first-served.

Depending on the wait time when you arrive, you can choose to dine there first or visit the church first and stop by the café afterward to relax.

CAFE OZIMOC Nagasaki

Since there happened to be empty seats at the café, we popped in for a bite before visiting the church.

Cafe OZIMOC is a family affair, run by a married couple and the husband's mother. The couple actually discovered the Ono area by accident, fell in love with the views and the laid-back lifestyle, and made the choice to move here.

The couple spent a decade bit by bit converting the long-neglected property into today's inviting, old-fashioned café, keeping the original stone-masonry structure intact.

With sunlight streaming down from the high wooden ceilings and breathtaking views of the islands and ocean stretching out before you, the space has a deeply tranquil atmosphere that makes you want to stay all day.

Homecooked Dishes Made with Local Ingredients

The ingredients at Cafe OZIMOC feature locally sourced, pesticide-free, seasonal fruits and vegetables, with every dish meticulously prepared by the owner’s wife. During our visit, we ordered the quiche set and the baked curry set.

The colorful arrangement of fresh vegetables paired beautifully with the pale-yellow quiche, making it a visual treat. Meanwhile, the rich aroma of the egg-filled quiche and the fragrant, spiced baked curry instantly whetted our appetite.

In addition to delicious meals, the café offers a selection of handmade desserts. The space also doubles as a shop, displaying unique, miscellaneous goods handcrafted by local Nagasaki artists.

From time to time, they even host live musical concerts, bringing a lively touch of energy to this small, quiet village.

Ono Church, a World Heritage Site

Ono Church Nagasaki

Most residents of Ono Village were Christians who had fled persecution on Ikitsuki Island (in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture) and in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Although the Meiji government officially lifted the ban on Christianity in 1873, the people of the Ono area chose to continue practicing their faith in secret, preserving the hidden traditions they had kept alive for generations.

It was not until 1893—when French missionary Father de Rotz and the local believers built a small chapel together—that the Christians finally had a secure place to worship. Situated on a small hill, Ono Church is frequently exposed to harsh coastal winds.

To withstand these gusts, a sturdy "De Rotz Wall" was constructed in front of the entrance, utilizing local basalt rocks bound together with a unique mortar made of lime and red clay.

This distinctive stone-masonry technique was widely adopted for residential homes throughout the Sotome area. Today, because of this striking architectural style, the Ono district has been designated a National Important Cultural Landscape, celebrated as the "Stone Wall Settlement Landscape."

In recent years, an increasing number of city dwellers have relocated to the countryside, choosing to take a leap of faith to pursue their passions and embrace a slower, more intentional pace of life.

Much like the couple behind Cafe OZIMOC who chose Ono Village, these newcomers foster deep connections with local residents. Their presence not only helps drive sustainable tourism to the village but also offers visitors a meaningful way to discover and honor the precious historical footprints left behind here.
