Tono City is located inland in Iwate Prefecture. Tono is said to be the birthplace of folk tales, but there are plenty of events that can only be enjoyed in winter, centered around Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival). In this article, we will introduce Tono's winter events.

"Tono Machiya Hinamatsuri" held in the central city area in front of Tono Station

During the Hinamatsuri in Tono Machiya, shops and public facilities are decorated with Hina dolls from the Edo, Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras, as well as Mizukibina, a style unique to Tono. Enjoy the various Hina dolls as you wander around the shops, asking "Show us your Hina dolls, Ogurensei!" Limited-time sweets sets are also available for sale.

Tono Machiya's Hinamatsuri

During the same period as the "Tono Machiya Hinamatsuri" (Doll Festival), limited edition goshuin stamps will be available at three shrines and five temples in the town.

The Tono City Museum, which introduces the nature, lifestyle, culture, and history of the people of Tono through a variety of videos and exhibits centered around the "Tono Monogatari," will be holding a special exhibition centered on Hina dolls from the Edo period through to the Meiji and Taisho periods, which are held as valuable materials in its collection.

Tono Dobekko Festival (Tono Furusato Village)

Enjoy special doburoku sake and Tono country cuisine in a curved house at Tono Furusato Village

"Dobekko" is the name given to the nostalgic cloudy sake "doburoku" brewed specially for the festival by Tono's sake breweries. The Dobekko Festival is a winter festival held in a thatched-roof Nanbu Magariya house where people used to live with their horses. Guests can enjoy local cuisine, old stories told by storytellers, and the local performing art of Kagura while drinking "raw doburoku," which can only be tasted at this festival.

Tono Dobekko Festival

The 42nd Tono Folktale Festival

A charming folktale from Tono that begins with, "Once upon a time there was..."

At the Tono Folktale Festival, storytellers will perform live folktales from Tono. In addition to the Tono Folktale Storytellers Association, students from elementary schools in the city will also perform, allowing you to enjoy a variety of Tono folktales.

A community play based on the stories of the Tono Monogatari

Every year, the theme of the play is a story related to the Tales of Tono, and the cast, script, and direction are all done by Tono residents.

Synopsis: "After losing her granddaughter, the old woman grows weaker by the day. Her son and his wife are troubled by this, so one day they take her out into the mountains and try to throw her into the valley. What will become of her...?"
