1-day Himeji Tour: World Heritage Castle and The Last Samurai Temple

[Himeji Castle] Gold-Guide recommends a tour of Himeji Castle, one of the first World Heritage sites in Japan, where you can fully enjoy the architectural beauty

This tour will take you to Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple, a famous filming location. Your first stop will be Himeji Castle, the most impressive castle in Japan. Its imposing white exterior and intricate, elegant architecture have stood the test of time for centuries. From inside the castle, you will enjoy panoramic views of Himeji city and a glimpse into the rich history of the area. After the tour, you will head to the beautiful Koko-en Garden, which is adjacent to the castle, and is a quintessential example of Edo-period landscaping. Wander through the garden areas, which reflect nine different styles and themes, and enjoy the beauty of history and nature. The tour will end with a visit to Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple, famous as the filming location for the movie The Last Samurai. Enjoy a tranquil moment in this historic setting, where the Hollywood movie starring Tom Cruise was set.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is affectionately known as "White Heron Castle" due to its graceful appearance resembling a white heron spreading its wings. It is one of five castles designated as Japan's national treasures. Its distinctive features include walls made entirely of white plaster, a five-tiered, six-story main tower with one basement, and a linked structure with three smaller towers on the east, west, and north sides connected by connecting towers.
The main tower of Himeji Castle was constructed in 1609. Even now, more than 400 years later, it still retains its beautiful appearance.

It is an authentic Japanese garden with the World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle, as a backdrop, and is a popular tourist destination in Himeji.
The garden, which spreads out to the southwest of Himeji Castle, covers an area of approximately 33,000 square meters.
It consists of nine gardens, including the "Oyashiki Garden" with its stroll-style pond and the "Tea Garden" with its authentic sukiya-style teahouse, Sojuan, and its atmosphere exudes the atmosphere of the Edo period, making it a popular location for filming period dramas and historical dramas.

Engyo-ji Temple is built in a quiet mountain area and has many temples and pagodas. It is roughly divided into three areas: Higashidani (Azumadani) from Niomon Gate to Jumyōin, Nakadani (Nakadani) from Maniden to the Great Lecture Hall, Dining Hall, and Jōgyo-do Hall to the Inner Sanctuary with the Kaizan-do Hall, and each area has a slightly different atmosphere.
Incidentally, it was Nishitani who instantly stole the heart of Edward Zwick, the director of the Hollywood movie "The Last Samurai."
